Show me a man safe from the grip of fate
And one who will not someday taste death.
One who death's taste will never sate

It is death, ever racing toward every soul,
Death hunts all with maintained pace
Exhausting our mounts and tiring the swiftest racers.
Tiring the racers, outlasting the chaste

If it turns away in flight, it is beyond reach;
If it turns away, escaping the chase
And if one day it gives chase, it catches up.
Or comes seeking on day’s face

And snatch away our kin, then our friends.

We yearn for either a companion or estates
O awakener of my longing, how harmful an awakener you are!
Yet yearner, why yearn for unworthy mates

I would have severed my ties with treacherous Time.
I’d have cut off fate’s stumbling plight

We are hurled toward the graves each night,
To the tombs we descend every night
And pillow our elbows in the barren dust.
In the desert of dust to rest our plight

Such news tears awake sleeping eyes
And left once-tranquil hearts trembling!
And sets trembling hearts to take flight

And how often what the soul never boasts

I'd have shouldered it, being bound and wary

If a star set after its emergence
Then suns from you have filled the eastern horizons.
Suns left your horizons effulgence

Death has wrested a hill from us against our will,
Fate with its injuries and stains
And left us your towering mountains.
Left your towering mountains and plains

With the robe still on, no damage is done
If the nights have tattered its gussets?
When nights have shredded it thread by thread undone

If we judge the night-visiting calamities fairly.

Cursed is he who was blessed in your place
And He who gave him yesterday as Provider has ended his life.
And lost who gave him yesterday grace

After taking for us from you a share
By the nights, with binding pledges, of our share in you.
Nights denied us of your gracious care

I did not fear fate would block for us
The nights' gaps and openings against us,

Or the death knell would obscure in the night
And he would be laid in sandy hollows amid the open waste.

We accepted, perfect in morals and care

Take solace for the one death took in the reward for that loss,
Let go what passed, be pleased with its prize
And trust in Him who rewards patience.
And trust the reward for those patient and wise

No creature, though fate oppresses its side
And leaves him helpless, may defy the Creator.
Can contend with its Maker, however it tried
