لَوَتْshe turned وَجهَهاher face عَنaway from شيبِgray hair رَأسيmy head وإنّهاand indeed she
لَوتْshe turned عنaway from بياضٍwhiteness أبيضاًwhite لونُهُits color غَضاfresh
She turned her face from the gray hair on my head, though she
If she would turn away from the gray hairs of my head, she whose face
turned a face, white in hue and fresh, away from whiteness.
Is fairer than the fairest white.
وَلوand if أَنصفتْshe were fair ماnot أعرضتْshe turned away عنfrom شبيههاone resembling her
ولاnor أبْدَلَتْهُshe gave him in exchange منin place of محبّتِهِlove for him بُغضاhatred
And had she been fair, she would not have shunned one like herself,
If she were just, she would not turn away from one like her.
Nor replaced her love for him with hatred.
She would not change her love for me into hate.
وأغضيتُand I turned a blind eye عنهاto her والبلابلand anguish فيin الحشاthe breast
ومنand whoever كانis مثلِيlike me حاملاًa bearer للهوىof love أغضىturns a blind eye
And I turned a blind eye to her, with anguish in my breast;
I turn away from her while nightingales sing in the thickets,
And whoever, like me, bears love turns a blind eye.
And one who bears love like mine turns away.
وماand not كنتُI was أرضىI am content بالرّضاwith approval قبلbefore حبّهاloving her
فصيّرنِيso it made me بالشيءِwith what لمdid not أرضهI accept it أرضىI am content
And before loving her, even approval did not satisfy me;
I was not pleased with acceptance before loving her.
So love made me content with what I had not accepted.
Make me pleased with that which did not please me.
