قالتْshe said ضَننتَyou begrudged عليناto us بالدّموعwith tears وقدthough already
سرناwe departed ودمعُكand your tears منهلٌّpouring freely إذاwhenever شيتاyou wished
She said, “You begrudged us your tears, though
She said, "You were stingy with tears, though our joy
we had departed, and your tears pour freely whenever you wish.”
and your tears would have been a spring when we wished."
فقلتso I said لمdid not تدرِknow عينيmy eye بالفراقِof the parting فلَمْand so did not
تمطرْrain عليهupon it لأنّيbecause I كنتُI was مبهوتاstunned
So I said, “My eye was unaware of the parting, and so did not
I said, "My eyes did not know separation from you, so how
rain upon it, for I was stunned.
could they rain upon it? For I was confounded."
ماwhat ضرّwould harm منsomeone نعتُهُhis description بالحسنِas beautiful مشتهرٌwell known
لوif كانhe was بالحسنِfor beauty والإحسانand kindness منعوتاdescribed
What harm would it do one renowned for beauty
What harm if one famed for beauty is described as beautiful,
if he were described as both beautiful and kind?
even if he were not adorned with beauty and kindness?
والزّادُand provisions منكِfrom you فإنْthen if لمdo not تبذليyou give سَرَفاًlavishly
فقدthen indeed رضيتُI am content إذاif لمdo not تسرفيyou spend lavishly القوتاsustenance
And provisions come from you; if you do not give lavishly,
And provision from you - if you do not give lavishly,
I am content, if you are not lavish, with enough to live on.
still I would be content if you did not stint the ration.
فَقدfor indeed بتتِّyou severed فلاso no بذلٌgiving ولاand no عِدَةٌpromise

For you have severed—neither generosity nor promise remains—
For you have spent the night away, so there is no gift or tryst,
a cord of your bond with me that had not been severed.”
no rope to join with you that was not cut.
