تراءَتْshe appeared لناto us يومَthe day of الأُبَيْرِقِal-Ubayriq فيin الدّجىthe darkness
ونحنand we بلاwithout بدرٍa full moon فنابتْso she stood in عنfor البدرِthe full moon
She appeared to us on the day of al-Ubayriq, in the darkness,
In the dark of night there shone for us
And we were without a full moon, so she took the full moon’s place.
A moonbeam's glow, though no moon was there.
وَأَغنَتْand she made unnecessary بِريّاهاwith her fragrance وماand not إنْemphatic particle تعطّرتْshe perfumed herself
عنin place of العِطْرِperfume حتّىuntil ماnot تحنّshe yearns إلىfor العِطْرِperfume
And her fragrance sufficed—though she had not perfumed herself—
Her radiance perfumed the air, yet asked
In place of perfume, till she no longer yearned for perfume.
No scent of flowers - her own fragrance was fair.
وَقامَand stood مُحيّاهاher face ضياءًin radiance وبهجةًand splendor
مَقامَthe place of طلوعِthe rising of الفَجرِdawn أَوor لؤلؤpearls البحرِthe sea
And her face, in radiance and splendor, took
Her light and joy replaced for us
The place of dawn’s rising, or the pearls of the sea.
The dawn's first blush, the sea's shimmering pearls.
وَحَكّمهاand gave her dominion فيناover us الهوىlove فَتلاعَبَتْso they toyed
بناwith us أريحيّاتُthe transports الجوىof love’s anguish وهْيَwhile she لاnot تدريknows
And love gave her dominion over us, so we were toyed with
Then love enthroned her in our hearts to reign -
By the transports of love’s anguish, while she was unaware.
The gentle breezes played with us, unaware.
