لذْ بالعَزاءِ فلا خِلٌّ تَضِنُّ به
ولاnor مقيمٌone who remains علىat دارthe abode of الحفاظِloyalty لكاfor you
ولا مقيمٌ على دار الحفاظِ لكا
Seek refuge in consolation: there is no friend you would cling to,
I find no solace in lament, no companion to grieve with me,
nor anyone who stays for you in the abode of loyalty,
No one stays in the abode of the departed.
ولاnor وفيٌّa faithful friend إذاif أعطيتُهI give him مِقَتِيmy affection
ولا وفيٌّ إذا أعطيتُه مِقَتِي

أعطَى المحبّةَ أو تاركتُه تركا
nor a faithful friend who, if I give him my affection,
No loyal friend, should I grant him my love
gives love in return—or, if I leave him, leaves me;
Or withdraw it and leave him.

ويُسلك الرَّحْلَ منّي حيثما سلكا
nor a wise man who offers me his counsel
No wise man offers me his advice,
and guides my saddle along whatever road he takes.
Or walks with me wherever I go.

If time has scorned me, leading me
hatred of the one I used to love, then it has knelt down.
To hate those I once loved, so be it.

Do you not see me in a dark, murky night,
Do you not see me in dark night enveloped,
where morning is lost to the people, or has perished?
Where dawn for people is lost or dead?

And I have complained, yet came back with nothing useful;
I complained but gained no benefit,
but I complained to one who had complained of the same.
Yet to whom would one like me complain?

Each day a man of treachery tosses me about
Each day a treacherous brother degrades me,
on the lowest ground, though I made him touch the heavens.
Casts me down though I touched the stars.

He seeks to oppose me: if I treat him gently,
If I do not restrain his anger, people shun him,
his ways grow harsh; or, if I weep with him, he laughs.
Or if I weep for him, they laugh.

أعطيتُه طَرَفَ البُقْيا فما اِمتسكا
And to many a man bent on hatred and loathing
How often have I censured one deserving blame,
I offered the edge of mercy, yet he would not hold on.
Offering him a glance of disapproval, but he does not refrain.

It does me no harm, as master of myself and my purpose,
Owning myself and my dwelling never harmed me,
not to be a king upon their wooden thrones.
If I am not lord of their tent poles.

As long as your honor is unblemished among men,
among men, let your wealth be plundered.
Leave your property open to plunder.

And preserve your life within your cheeks, holding cheap
And guard your life, humiliated,
in its defense the blood of souls that is shed.
Lest it be shed like the blood of souls.

Do you not see sustenance come to a man filled
Do you not see sustenance comes to man abundantly
with sleep? Then abandon galloping and trotting.
From afar? So leave stinginess and slackness!

Leave caution, for how much caution will you take
is no protection against misfortune that befalls you.
That does not ward off disaster befalling you?

And a man may perish, though pointed in a direction
Man strays, led astray, to the right course,
toward what is right; another may escape bewildered.
And escapes, confused.

How often the lawless roam freely,
and how many a man drinks from his doom, carrying arms and armor!
While the lawful carry doubt's burden!

And I have a friend in outward show, yet he is draped
I have a friend of the suburbs who pretends
in robes of enmity that he has donned for himself.
To me love while cloaked in enmity.

If I am smooth with him, he is rough toward me through the night;
When I make things easy for him he grieves for me,
and if I shine one day in his presence, he darkens.
When I perform ablution at his house, he is troubled.

And whenever the deep wounds he inflicted on me heal,
Whenever his insides swell against me,
he scrapes at them with his nails and reopens them.
He soothes them with his claws and bites me.

He scatters tears upon his cheeks, making me imagine
He sheds tears on his cheeks to make me think
affection from him; yet it was not for affection that he wept.
He loves me, yet he never cries for love.

Whenever I think he is in my hands,
I found him shared in the hands of the people.
I find him shared among the people.

And a companion whose look deceived my eyes
A friend whose glance my eyes mistook,
was neither raw gold nor wealth when smelted.
Who was neither innocent nor faithful when tested.

I took him in and spent my whole life wishing
wishing that I had come to abandon him.
I had left him.

Between me and humankind is a veil I keep patching;
Between me and people there is a veil I patch,
and if I neglected its mending, it would be torn open.
If I neglected mending it, it would be torn.

So tell those who envy the merit I have come to possess:
So say to those envious of the merit I possess,
Merit, O people, belongs in this world to whoever possesses it.
“Merit, my people, in this world belongs to those who possess it.”

My plantings have flourished; what fault is mine toward people
My branches thrived, so why should I be blamed by people
for whom my planting never once grew and flourished?
Whose trees never grew or bore fruit?
