قُلsay للّذيto the one who راحَwent in the evening بِعزٍّin glory وَاِغتَدىand went in the morning
يسحبُhe trails منهfrom it مِطْرَفاًa bordered cloak مورّداrose-red
Say to him who goes forth in glory, evening and morning,
Say to him who left arrogantly wronging others,
trailing a rose-red cloak of that glory,
Pulling the embroidered train behind him,
صنيعَin the manner of مَنْone who يطمعُhopes أنْto يُخلَّداbe made immortal
جمعتَyou have amassed ماwhat لاno بدّescape أنْthat يُبدّداit be scattered
as one who hopes to live forever would do:
It is the work of one who hopes to be immortalized,
You have amassed what must inevitably be scattered.
You gathered what is bound to be scattered.
إنْif لمnot يزُلْit vanishes فيin يومِهِits day زالit will vanish غداtomorrow
ياO جامعاًone who gathers لغيرهfor someone other than himself مُحتشِداmustering his efforts
If it does not vanish in its day, it will vanish tomorrow.
If it doesn't vanish during his lifetime, it will be gone tomorrow.
O you who strive to gather for someone else,
O you who hoard for others covetously!
نَضَدتَyou have piled up مالاًwealth هلhave ...? نَضَدتَyou piled up أمَداa lifespan
سيّانِalike مَنْone who سارwalked يجرّtrailing العَدَداthe multitude
you have piled up wealth—have you piled up a lifespan?
You amassed wealth, did you amass any lifespan?
Alike are he who walks with a multitude trailing behind
The same are those who walk dragging grandeur,
ومنand one who يَظِلّremains واحداًone مُنفرداalone
كلاهماboth of them مفارقٌwill part with ماwhat وَجداthey both found
and he who remains solitary and alone.
And those who live alone secluded.
Both will part with what they have found,
Both will leave what they found.
وَصائِرٌand will become ماwhat يَقتَنيهِhe possesses it قِدداshreds
وإنْand if أتاهcomes to him حَتفُهhis death لاnot يُفتَدىhe is ransomed
and what each possesses will become scattered shreds.
And what one acquires will be taken away.
And when his death comes, no ransom can save him.
And if death befalls him, he cannot be ransomed.

Alas, how heedless we are of guidance,
Alas! We did not neglect guidance,
and how clear the truth is to us, if only it were sought!
Truth has been made clear to us, had we intended.

How often we ride rough ground and cut across level plains,
How we ride the rugged path and spurn the paved road!
and embrace error while casting right guidance aside!
We take falsehood and cast away righteousness,

It is time to renounce our paltry possessions,
It is time we renounce our humbleness,

and, after past wrongdoing, to take the straight course,
And after past tyranny that we be just.
and to be seen shunning base deeds.
And that we be seen detached from this world.

Abstain patiently from water, though thirst last long;
With patience over denial, though rejection is prolonged.
if the unfailing spring eludes me, I refuse the scant pool.
If I miss the count, I shall stay awake at night.
ولستُand I am not أرضىcontent to accept بالهِجانِin exchange for purebred camels النَّقَداsmall sheep

أماdo you not ترىsee زمانَناour age ماhow أنكداwretched
And I will not take small sheep for purebred camels.
I am not pleased with fake pearls.
Do you not see how wretched our age is?
Don't you see our time has become gloomy?

It is as though, whenever we ask it for bounty,
It is as if, when we ask it for charity,
we were saddling a fettered, full-grown camel of its own,
We leave it downcast and fettered.

or beholding the sun through inflamed eyes,
Or we stare into the sun until our eyes are blinded.
or coaxing fire from a sparkless fire-stick.
Or we feel the fire with a rigid stick.

And a companion roused me, but slept himself,
One who woke me up while he slept.
and sought to set me right, but did harm instead.
And tried to fix me but ruined me instead.

He envies me, though I do not think I should be envied;
He envies me yet I don't feel envied.
he spent the night upbraiding me for bestowing bounty.
He stayed up blaming me for being generous.

So I said, when he blamed me and called me foolish,
So I said, when he blamed me and impugned,
now descending, now ascending:
Pointing sometimes and elevating at others:

بِتْناwe spent the night بذاتِat Dhāt العَلَمينal-ʿAlamayn (the two landmarks) سُهَّداsleepless
Is it not a fair exchange for wealth that I be praised?
Isn't being praised for wealth just?
We spent the night sleepless at Dhāt al-ʿAlamayn,
We spent the night with a mind busy and distracted.

awaiting, through a long, black night—
Awaiting in a long dark night,
as though it had sprinkled kohl over us,
As if sins were sprinkled upon us.

Or as if bleakness was eternal.

At dawn like a polished rock bare.

As though, with dawn's appearance, the horizon
As if when it appears, the horizon
had changed its hue to silver and gold.
Changed its color and became turbid.

And we seek only vengeance against our foes,
And we only pluck the strings of enmity
with every bare-cheeked, beardless youth,
With all the indecency of the bold.

One with an ambition that only climbed peaks,
When, one day, he makes praise his shoes and cloak,
If he is worn in praise one day and turns back,

And extends with eggs or arrows his hand,
no fear of death draws near his breast.
Fear of demise won't come near his nostrils.

Unfortunate am I, though I don't intend misfortune,
and without keeping an appointment among my foes,
And I have not fulfilled any promises to enemies.

wrapped in every unavenged wrong, grief-stricken,
Wrapped in every depressed chord,
offering my shoulders to heavy burdens,
Laying heavy burdens.

Whoever wants to excel what I have,

Stand tall, it is possible not to sit still!

And draw for the opportunity a sharp sword,
And come to glory's pools among those who come,
And return to the meadows of glory among those who returned!

So whoever seeks glory with effort, his hands were supported!
