وماand not ضرّنيharmed me الإمْلاقُpoverty والثّروةُand wealth الّتيthat
وما ضرّني الإمْلاقُ والثّروةُ الّتي
يذلّare abased بهاthrough it أهلُpeople اليَسارِof means ضَلالُfolly
يذلّ بها أهلُ اليَسارِ ضَلالُ
Poverty has not harmed me, and the wealth that
Neither did wealth and luxury do me wrong,
abases people of means is folly.
By which the people of affluence are led astray.
أليسis it not يُبَقَّىis preserved المالُwealth إلّاexcept ضَنانةًout of stinginess
أليس يُبَقَّى المالُ إلّا ضَنانةً
وأفْقَرَand have impoverished أقواماًpeople ندىًgenerosity ونوالُand giving
وأفْقَرَ أقواماً ندىً ونوالُ
Is wealth not preserved only out of stinginess?
Does not wealth remain but avarice,
And generosity and giving have impoverished people.
Impoverishing people of bounty and fortune?
إذاif لمnot أُنِلْI fulfill بالمالِwith wealth حاجةَthe need of مُعسرٍsomeone in hardship
إذا لم أُنِلْ بالمالِ حاجةَ مُعسرٍ
حَصورٍrestraining himself عنfrom الشّكوىcomplaint فماthen not لِيَbelonging to me مالُwealth
حَصورٍ عن الشّكوى فما لِيَ مالُ
If I do not use wealth to meet the need of someone in hardship
If I do not fulfill the need of one in distress
who refrains from complaint, then I have no wealth.
With wealth, of one unable to complain, then why do I have wealth?
