Perhaps reproach will make passion falter,
Yearning carries me away, and languor takes its toll,
and weariness curb its unbridled rush.
Weariness weighs down my eyelids, boredom dulls my soul.

قلبٌ ونيطَ بحفظه شُغُلُ
Love is the most easily lost of all that is embraced
Love is a wanderer that passed my heart one day,
by a heart, and whose keeping is entrusted to a care.
Too busy was I to grasp it, and my chance slipped away.

I have indeed accompanied life with patient endurance,
I've lived a tranquil life, spurning the snare of love,
free of longing: amorous dalliance cannot master me.
No coquetry allures me, no seductress with a glove.

If I wish, I erect a tent; yet
If I wished, I'd pitch a tent, shun the crowd, live alone,
neither curtains nor canopies win my company.
Without companions save the sand dunes and the stone.

And many a man with sun-scorched cheeks is carried
The camel, hugging the road, carries the wayfarer,
forever on their necks by the roads.
Who left his homeland when fortunes did confer.

Estranged from homelands, so whenever
When luck smiled on his land he left in haste to roam,
homelands gain hold of him, he departs.
Severing relations and breaking family homes.

وتقطّعتْ عن عيشِهِ العُقَلُ
He left the lands to those who dwell in them,
He strides uphill to win the heights through steady pace,
and the tethers broke away from his life.
His feet escaping stumbles by God's guiding grace.

He strives toward the heights and wins them,
And when triumph's decreed for the noble youth by fate,
with a stride whose footfall stumbling shuns.
Words pardon him, and even those who blame abate.

And when deliverance is decreed for a young man,
My faith, though twisted by dissent and false attacks,
wounds fade, and harm is a slight matter.
Is straightened by the creeds of Ahmad and Ibn Hanbal.

What I am owed, though delay has diverted it,
When my views were distorted by the times, anon,
bright swords and spears turn toward me.
I held to them, scheming, maneuvering, holding on.

But others, if time holds them back,
And fate lures us to set out, travel far and wide,
are failed by their judgments and stratagems too.
Journeys enchant us, and new vistas we aspire.

And time draws us toward an end
How soon life's goal draws near! How fleet our days take wing!
at which journeys and travels cease.
Morn is our life, and nightfall death's reckoning.

العمرُ صبحٌ والرّدى أُصُلُ
How near deeds lie to an appointed end!
When youth pursues its course, untouched by schemes of man,
Life is morning, and death is eventide.
No tricks of time can halt the divinely drafted plan.

And a man, though his pursuer miss him,
Thrown on the road of fate, my provisions are these:
will not be missed by time's ambushes.
Solutions for each problem, ways to face each unease.

Cast upon the roads of calamity, he has
Does hope mislead, beguiling me to follow its call,
a halt and a departure with its recurring assaults.

while humiliation attends whoever has hope?
None stand tall in my eyes, none match my bravery.

Men lord it over me, yet
Why should I plead excuses? Time and pain will come
to my eyes not one of them appears a man.
To fell the man who seeks escape by excuses numb.

excuses ruin the man they soothe throughout his life?

Every pleasing thing irritates my eyelids,
When I reach Hussein's shrine, may those who visit thrive,
and honey turns bitter in my throat.
And may those who love him enjoy long, worthy lives.

The imams amassed devotees drawn by Hussein's light,

His love united clans once fractured in hostile fight.

In every knowing heart he has a special place,
for my bond with him be friends and friendships.
For every noble deed, his life provides the base.

That is he for whom allegiance is united,
solace for mankind, a wellspring ever renewed,
and creeds have joined in loving him.
His remembrance uplifts the soul when spirits are low.

In every kindness he has a foothold,
Where promises bind, gifts rain down in plenty,
and every noble deed has in him its example.
And words bear fruit, fused to deeds beneficent.

Supple-fingered, his downpour is lasting rain
When eloquence adorns the words of one upright,
for petitioners, and his first draught brings repeated draughts.
Prattle is hushed, and even critics stand polite.

And bounty is there where promises are absent,
Though slander circulated and doubt spread its stain,
and action is bound to the spoken word.
His noble mien dispelled it, as light swallows all bane,

And when his eloquence lends speech its voice,
God bless you! May the earth enrich where you have trod,
talk grows quiet, and the timid man falls silent.
May streams abound, palm trees thrive, and cool shade applaud.

Such is he—and how many a dark ordeal he entered,
You braced men's wills when disaster raised its din,
while conjecture within it was a drunken drinker!
And comforted frightened hearts as death phalanx closed in.

It brought him forth with radiant brow, as
When fate raged, clashing its swords in fell disease,
openings reveal the sheen of a keen sword.
Only the brave stood firm, weakly souls fled with unease.

And you indeed—if a man is reckoned a forebear—
When friendship flees, each rebuke makes rancor rawer,
are of a people who, when matched in excellence, excel.
And shackles of regret weigh down the back ever lower.

The generous when mankind is miserly,
They see you excel and seek to outrun you in vain,
and those who advance when others recoil.
Even with a head start, envy would make them refrain.

When hearts quest but cannot attain what they hold dear,
reins nor braided cords hold them back.
Despair's the most bitter herb for the soul to bear.

peoples sought them, yet never reached them!
When branches are barren, you make green shoots appear.

To defend me suffices; you're a sanctuary, a guard,
whose folds conceal rebuke and reproach.
Sheltering my clan, protecting where I am marred.

And when the noble-born man's muffled cries rise,
You raised me high when I was sunk in oblivion's mire,
and the champion falters in his steps,
You revived my ruined fortunes, gave me all I desire.

I will thank you as long as my feet tread earth's expanse
bright swords rain down, and spears are drenched.
And my thoughts aspire to high goals and souls can entrance.

On this day, may you prosper and triumph yet higher,
when death had craned its neck to seize it.
As honor revives with your coming, glowing like fire.

bereavement and grief are lifted from him.
