O you who dwell behind the tightly shut gate,
O you who lingers behind the thick curtains
how grievous to me that we do not meet.
Give me solace that we do not meet
دخلentered الزّمانُtime كماas كرهناwe dreaded بينناbetween us

Time came between us, as we dreaded,
Time has entered as we hated between us
and struck our union with separation.
And scattered a gathering between us with separation
وودِدْتُand I wished لمّاwhen قلتُI said قدalready فارقتُهُI parted from him

I wished, when I said, 'I have parted from him
And I wished when I said I had parted from him
beneath the stones,' that I had not spoken truth.
Beneath the tents that I had not believed

I laid him down, clad in the earth's woven shroud,
And I threw him shrouded in the weaving of soil
in a narrow pit with blackened sides.
In the depths of a dark narrow confinement
وفعلتُand I did فيهto him وإنّنِيand indeed I شَفِقٌtenderly concerned بهfor him
لمّاwhen يئستُI despaired فِعالَthe deeds of غيرِone unlike المشفقِthe compassionate
Though I cared tenderly for him, I did to him,
And I did to him though I am gentle with him
when I despaired, the deeds of one without compassion.
When I despaired the actions of other than the gentle
ورجعتُand I returned عنهaway from him كأنّنِيas though I لمhad not ألقهI met him

I turned away from him as though I had never met him,
And I turned away from him as if I had not met him
as though his breeze had never steeped me in fragrance.
And as if I had not breathed his scent

I weep, yet no departed dead man is brought back
I cry and no lament returns the departed
by my anguish for him or my long, burning grief.
My anguish for him, nor my long burning
وسَرقتُهand I stole him مِنْfrom بينamong مَنْthose whom حرّمتهI withheld him

I stole him away from those to whom I had denied him;
And I stole him from those who made him forbidden
then lost him, and wished I had never stolen.
So I lost him and wished I had not stolen

And who built the two pyramids then topped them
with striped cloth, brocade, and heavy silk?
With plaster, and brocade, and silk

Or where is he who raised his vaulted hall's structure
Or where is he who raised his palace high
in glory, like a star soaring in the sky?
In pride like a star suspended in the sky?

And through the nights, at dawn and dusk, you see
You would see the nights, morning and evening
its late afternoons dewy, its splendor fresh.
The youth of its origin faded of elegance

His gates once opened to riches;
Its doors would open to visitors
then his death turned him back at a closed gate.
Then its fate shut it with a locked door

How often he rested on cushions in the heights;
And how they laid out carpets in the hills
now we pillow him on the soil of the stony plain.
While now we lay him in the barren sands

And many a man crowned with a jeweled circlet of gold
And one crowned with inlaid carnelian
has fine dust in the grave as the crown upon his head.
His skull in the grave is bare of refinement

Above his pit branches of myrtle
branches of the 'ishriq shrub where banners once waved.
Tremble in a hole after stately pillars

Death has made all men equal: a brave man
Fate equalized between men so the valiant
is like a coward, and a wealthy man like a pauper.
Became like the coward and the noble like the villain

And when they pass in bands to decay's dominion,
And when they passed away as bodies into decrepitude
they are cast into the hands of a foolish, clumsy wretch.
They were discarded into the hands of a reckless fool

So their skins in the claws of every tearer
their bones between the jaws of one who gnaws them bare.
And their bones chewing in every gnawer

now they dwell in every flat and barren wilderness.
Yet now lodge in every desolate wasteland

It is as though their horseman never mounted a noble steed,
As if their horseman never rose high
and their orator never spoke in an assembly.
And their orator in an assembly did not speak

Say to him who hoarded treasure for others
in ignorance, and amassed his wealth for one who would scatter it:
In ignorance and gathered his money to disperse

If you were miserly in what you spent
it passes, against your will, into a spender's fingers.
It became despite you in the hands of a spender

And if a miser, through stinginess, denies himself
And when the miser protects himself from his provision in stinginess
his sustenance, it is as though he were never provided for.
It is as if he was not provisioned

A messenger announced al-Shumsi's death to me,
And a messenger brought me the news
and I wished his tongue had never been created.
So I wished his tongue was not created

I strove with all my strength—though he was certain
And I struggled with all effort though it was certain
of his account—to have it prove untrue.
His saying if it was uncertain

His whispered news afflicted me—may he never whisper it!—
So I spent the night from his companionless companion
with what keeps me awake through the darkness and robs me of sleep.
On a pillow, sleepless and distressed

And I was deprived of every admirable trait
and lost every delightful thing about him.
And lost from him everything graceful

and many a thing we seek remains beyond our reach.
And by God how many sought are not attained

After him, I am like a man in a wilderness,
It is as if after him I had a barrenness
his waterskin empty, his she-camels worn out.
Its friendly desolation like the elegant twilight

His literary learning and his sciences were indeed erased
And indeed time has erased his manners and knowledge
from us by death, against our will, as a written page is wiped clean.
From us, despite the wiping out destruction

as though we had never breathed his fragrance.
And as if we never breathed his scent

Or a stallion with his strike in a stallion
or one army into another with its blows.

nor ate anything but the flesh of the battle's crush.

Their spear-shafts, among the ribs in battle, had
Not the spears of burnt sires
a clamor no crackling of burning reeds could match.

he wore armor woven from his own pooled blood.

In the armor of youth and a cloak not worn
in the armor of youth and a mantle not yet threadbare.

The roaring of the hissing enraged lion in the night
by night the growling of an enraged lion.

From a towering mountain or grandeur from a dome
from a height, or full-grown camels among young ones.

To be like the sun or the shining planet
like the sun or a gleaming star.

My hand was powerless to show you kindness in death;
So take all the farewell from my speaking
so take all that kindness from my words.
