أعوجُI turn aside بماtoward what تُظْلِلْنَهُyou shade it فأَقيلُand so I rest at noon
O trees of the two valleys, perhaps I may
O trees of the two valleys, perhaps I will bend
turn aside to where you cast your shade, and rest at noon.
To rest in your shade and find repose,
وفيكُنَّand in you ليfor me ماwhat تشتهيdesires النّفسُthe soul منof مُنىًwishes
وليسand there is not إلىto ماwhat تشتهيهit desires it سبيلُa path
And in you are the wishes my soul desires,
And find in you what my soul desires of comfort,
yet there is no path to what it desires.
Though the comfort my soul desires is out of reach,
ولوand if أنّنيthat I منكنّfrom you زُوّدتُI were supplied ساعةًan hour
تَرَوَّحَwould find refreshment فيin أظلالكنّyour shade عليلُan ailing man
And were I granted an hour by you,
If I could take provisions from you for an hour
an ailing man would find refreshment in your shade.
And rest in your shade, tired and weary,
وَماand not أَبتغيI seek إلّاexcept القليلَa little وكمand how often شفىcured
كثيرَmuch سَقامٍsickness فيin الرّجالmen قليلُa little
And I seek only a little; how often has
I seek only a little, yet how much
a little cured much sickness in men.
A little has cured abundant affliction among men.
