My eyelid is lavish with tears in grief for you,
My eyelids shed tears of sorrow for you
yet miserly for everyone other than you.
While towards others they are miserly

نَصْفِ والعَدْلِ سالمٌ وجريحُ
They reproached me; yet, in the eyes of those who uphold
They blamed me, though to the people of justice and fairness
fairness and justice, the unhurt and wounded are not alike.
Both the sound and the wounded are equal

Then both eloquent and inarticulate are the same

I have a tongue and a weeping eye that have borne
I have a tongue and weeping eyes that carry
the loss of you: this conceals it, and that reveals it.
Your misfortune - one conceals and the other reveals

And the healthy see me who don't know
that it is someone else who is sound and well.
That it is others who are safe and sound

Against my will, I was bereft of you, and you were taken far away
Despite me, you turned away, and death
by death; the tomb enclosed you.
Enshrouded you in the grave

there is nothing but rocks and stone slabs,
None but partridges and travelers

from birds crossing leftward or rightward.
Of the birds, neither the fleer nor the moaner

يَتَلاشى وإنّما الرُّوحُ روحُ
And whence comes permanence, when the body is dust,
And from where is permanence, when the body is dust
crumbling away, and the spirit is only spirit?
Vanishing, and only the soul remains

And if a young man's end is
And if death is the ultimate end of man

What then is the point of analogies and hints?

And when the inevitability of death
by a chance of time, then comes its morning draught.
Overtakes us by the turning of time, it is morning

The reward which seems meager to some
is, for their sake, spacious for you.

One who sends down pouring rain has quenched

Your grave in which you lie
