O sheikh, indeed whoever rouses the game
O Sheikh, he who rebels against fate
is like whoever catches it, in reason's judgment.
Is like one who contends with reason's rule
هِجتَyou stirred مِنِّيfrom me علىtoward القوافيthe rhymes جَناناًa heart
لمnot يكنwas عنtoward بديعهاtheir marvels بكليلِdull
You stirred in me a heart for rhymes
You blamed me for the rhymes' gardens
that was not dull to their marvels.
Though their elegance was unmatched

So the sea of my thought overflowed, and far spread
So the sea of my mind was weaned
my verse within it, with no meaning already uttered.
And my words wandered in it meaninglessly

That is merit, for you pointed the way to merit,
That grace, when you showed me excellence
and in night travel one cannot do without a guide.
And in life's journey a guide is surely needed
