Now address the minister with words of praise
Say to the minister words of praise
for the mighty favors he bestows—
For the immense favors he bestows

Abu Sa'd, the one without whom
Abu Sa’d, without whom the affairs
the affairs of mankind would have no order:
Of the two worlds would be in chaos

I disdained, out of nobility, to be credited with
I disdain to be seen receiving
praise that spread abroad for base men.
Praise circulating among vile folk

I would have turned away only from the base,
I would not deviate save from the vile
nor halted to rest except among the noble.
Nor take delight save with the noble

But taqiyyah has always led me

To words and deeds I do not favor

From those whose guidance we follow
With a people whose guidance

Lies in the lawful or the forbidden

we learned courteous treatment of enemies,
We feign affection for enemies
while our entrails burned as with blazing fire.
While hiding malice like embers

Were it not for what you see, you would have heard my words.
If not for what you know, you would hear my words
And many an eloquent speaker has been afflicted with a muzzle.
And how eloquent the veiled can be!

Soon comes a time I watch for
in which dawn becomes distinct from darkness.
When dawn will distinguish night from day

I shall speak whenever I wish, without caution,
I will say what I wish without caution
and do whatever I please, without inhibition.
And do as I please without modesty

For a man to live clinging to no desire,
For life is not lived by base begging
and delighting in nothing, is like death.
Nor abjectly, like a fluttering dove

It is the age that never, for a single day, was free
A time in which no cure avails
of sickness for a captive in its hands.
The hands of one struck with illness

Unruly amid opposites: ill fortune
Tempestuous, with no happiness
without good fortune, and dawn in darkness.

None can make a difference but
a few, between a sharp blade and a blunt one.
A few, with anger or patience

And every utterance spoken to ward off
Every word said in defense
evil is free of blame.
Of evil is naught but blame

For feet are not equated with necks,
Feet are not made even by plains
nor is a camel's foot made equal to its hump.
Nor is a shoe equaled to a horseshoe

And one who is deficient has never drawn near,
One deficient will never approach
by being declared superior, to the abode of perfection.
The abode of perfection by favor

And your false praise of a man is satire,
Your praise of a person falsely is censure
and a phantom that visited in sleep's intoxication.
An apparition in the sleep of dreams

If we were to count every crooked one
from goodness worthy of blame,
Truly deserving of blame

People would all be equal

So praise of you alone, of all mankind, is lawful,
So praising you above all people is lawful
and praise of the rest of humanity is wholly forbidden.
While everything else is forbidden
