No youthful dalliance remains to me after gray hair;
No youth remains for me after gray hairs,
youth has gone, and after it my raptures.
Gone is youth and after it my levity,

Now I hope for no union with a secluded maiden
Now I no longer hope for the union of a gazelle,
ever, nor fear a budding maiden's rejection.
Nor fear the repulsion of an old hag,

O my companion, your reproach has become plain;
O my friend, your repulsion has become evident,
for gray hair reproaches me over my loved ones more than you do.
For gray hair is more repulsive to me than you among my loved ones,

The fifty years have stood in—and the seven that
I have turned fifty and then sixty, after which
I have beyond them—for my companions in reproaching me.
I have no excuse to my companions for repulsing them,

A reproacher may sometimes show lenience and not rebuke,
Perhaps the repulser was not blamed, and gray hair
but gray hair at the two temples shows no lenience.
In both cheeks is no cause for blame,

Gray hair has attained aim after aim
Old age has achieved its purpose and aim with me
from me, but I have not attained my aims through it.
Yet with it I could not achieve my hopes,

I hoped it would cure my hidden illness,
but I gained it as another pain added to my pains.
But it only increased my weakness and frailty,

Youth once was my intercessor with the doll-like beauties;
My youth interceded for me with beauties,
gray hair, after its departure, incited them against me.
While gray hair after its loss makes me more desirous,

Many are their quarters besides my quarters in love,
and their domain there is not my domain.
And their intimacy there is not my intimacy,

Gray hair had arrived and reproach was of no use,

You severed your connection though I had no crime,
though my coming and going was toward union with you.
And my coming and going was to be connected to you,

He who ignited the passion in my heart led it
camel-drivers at midmorning drive slow mounts.

That refuses emancipation on the day of freeing slaves,

you will hear as many of its peers as you wish.
You will hear from it what you wish of prose and verse,
وَاِسمَعْand hear كَلاماًspeech لمnever يُحَكْbeen woven شِبْهٌa likeness لهto it
ملآنَfilled بالإحسانِwith excellence والإطرابِand delight
And hear speech whose like has never been woven,
And listen to speech unmatched,
brimming with excellence and delight:
Full of favor and excitement,
روضاًa garden ولكنْbut ليسnot يجنِيplucks زَهرَهits flowers
إِلّاexcept يمينُكyour right hand مالكَO master of الآدابِletters
a garden, but no one plucks its blossoms
A garden, but its blossoms are picked
except your right hand, O master of letters.
Only by your right hand, O master of literature!
وَإِذاand if المَسامعُlistening ears أنصفتْjudge fairly لَمnot تَنتقصْdisparage
إِلّاexcept كَلامِيmy speech وحدَهit alone وخطابيand my address
And when listening ears judge fairly, they disparage nothing
And when ears judge fairly, they detract
except my words alone and my address.
Nothing but my words and address,
