    فيها لنا أبداً عِظاتُ

In this world, and in those

within it, there are always lessons for us:

    تٌ أو صروفٌ مُدبِراتُ

    either turns of fortune approaching,

    or turns of fortune receding.

no, nor bright swords and brown

    spears, bare and leveled.

what the women announcing death say,

or what, when they pass by,

the deserted dwellings say to them.

  29. فالضّاحكاتُ وقد نعم

So those who laughed, and once lived in ease

in them, are the very ones who weep.

    their peers, there was calamity.

    بمماتِهمْ والمَكرُماتُ

    Generosity died among us

with their deaths—and noble deeds too.
