لا دَرَّ دَرُّ الحِرْصِ والطّمعِ

لا دَرَّ دَرُّ الحِرْصِ والطّمعِ

ومذلّةٍ تأتيكَ مِن نُجَعِ

ومذلّةٍ تأتيكَ مِن نُجَعِ

May no bounty flow from greed and covetousness,

The covetousness and greed bring no fruitful gain,

or from humiliation brought to you by seeking pasture.

Only humiliation comes to you from such vain terrain.

وإذا اِنتفعتَ بما ذَلَلْتَ بهِ

وإذا اِنتفعتَ بما ذَلَلْتَ بهِ

فَلأَنتَ حقّاً غيرُ مُنتفِعِ

فَلأَنتَ حقّاً غيرُ مُنتفِعِ

And if you profit through what has abased you,

If with submission you happen to gain and attain,

then truly you have gained nothing.

In truth you are not benefited in the end or main.

ومصارعُ الأحياءِ كلِّهِمُ

ومصارعُ الأحياءِ كلِّهِمُ

في الدّهرِ بين الرِّيّ والشِّبَعِ

في الدّهرِ بين الرِّيّ والشِّبَعِ

And the deaths of all the living

The death place of all the living in this life

throughout time lie between quenched thirst and sated hunger.

Is between satiation and being free of strife.

وإذا علمتُ بفرقتِي جِدَتِي

وإذا علمتُ بفرقتِي جِدَتِي

فعلامَ فيما فاتنِي جزعي

فعلامَ فيما فاتنِي جزعي

And if I know I shall part with my wealth,

When I know that my ancestors have parted and gone

why, then, should I grieve over what has escaped me?

Why should I grieve for what from me has flown?

من لا تراه معي وقد قعدتْ

من لا تراه معي وقد قعدتْ

عنّي الرّجال معاً فليس معي

عنّي الرّجال معاً فليس معي

Whoever you do not see beside me when men have held back

For those I see not with me now I've sat

from me, all together, is not beside me.

With no men left around, no friend or mate.

وَإذا ثَويتُ بدار مَخصبةٍ

وَإذا ثَويتُ بدار مَخصبةٍ

وشَرِكتُ فيها فالورى شِيَعِي

وشَرِكتُ فيها فالورى شِيَعِي

And if I settle in a fertile land,

If I take refuge in a fertile abode

and have a share in it, all humankind are my supporters.

With partners sharing, the people are my devotees.
