    والعمرُ يذهب والأيّامُ تُختَلَسُ

    Man gathers, while the world scatters;

And life passes, and the days are snatched away.

And we grope through darkness where there is

No shining full moon, no star, no flame.

So often we stitch a tear that will not mend

In it, and guard something that cannot be guarded.

And how often we are humbled, though among us is every man of pride,

And submit, though within us are dignity and proud defiance.

And how can a wise man be content to have

A clean garment, while his honor beneath it is stained?

Or how can the eyelid of one defiled ever close,

While behind him a predator gapes to kill?
