خلِّ المَدامِعَ في المنازلِ تسفحُ
والقلبُand the heart منfrom ذكرremembering الأحبّةِthe loved ones يفرحُrejoices
والقلبُ من ذكر الأحبّةِ يفرحُ
Let the tears pour forth in the dwellings.
Let tears flow in homes and weep,
And the heart rejoices in remembering loved ones.
While hearts rejoice at the memory of loved ones.

I had not imagined that the gazelles of the dune
I had not known that the gazelles of Naqa
Would appear before my dark pupil on the day at Ramah.
Matched the blackness of my eyes the day we passed by Rāmah.
لمّاwhen مَرَرْنَthey passed بناby us خطفنthey snatched قلوبَناour hearts
لمّا مَرَرْنَ بنا خطفن قلوبَنا
وقلوبُهنّand their hearts مقيمةٌremaining still لاnot تبرحُmove away
وقلوبُهنّ مقيمةٌ لا تبرحُ
When they passed us, they snatched away our hearts,
When they passed us by, they snatched our hearts away,
While their own hearts stayed still and did not stir.
While their hearts remained unmoving.

والدّار من بعد الشّواغفِ إنّما

هيَ للجَوى والحزِن مغنىً مَطرحُ
And the dwelling, once the heart-ravishers have gone, is only
After passion has gone, the abode
A home and resting place for anguish and sorrow.
Becomes a refuge for yearning and lingering sorrow.

واللّيلand the night جَوْنُblack أديمِهِits skin لاnot يوضِحُbrightens
واللّيل جَوْنُ أديمِهِ لا يوضِحُ
God be praised for a visitor who came to us at the hour of slumber,
They paid us a false visit in our time of woe,
While night, black-skinned, gave no light.
While the night wrapped its endless darkness about us.

And the pale camels had been made to kneel after exhaustion,
The Pleiades have set after their rising,
And the riders lay sprawled among them.
And the group of stars lie scattered between them.

فيما طَرقتَ وَلَيلنا مُستحلِكٌ
لَوwhy ماnot طرقتَyou visited وصبحُناand our dawn متوضَّحُshining clear
لَو ما طرقتَ وصبحُنا متوضَّحُ
Why did you visit when our night was pitch-black?
While you came at night and our night was starless,
Why not visit when our dawn was shining clear?
Would that you had come at dawn when day breaks clear!

حَتّى يُفرّقنا مضيءٌ أجْلحُ
No sooner does a dark, shaggy-browed night unite us
While sorrow, dark and gloomy, binds us together,
Than a bright, bare-browed dawn parts us.
Till sunrise, bright and radiant, divides us.

O my two friends, reflect on time,
My friend, reflect on fate,
On what this most hideous age has brought.
Consider well what fate has brought.

Each day a companion of mine draws away
Each day some trouble befalls me, estranging me,
From me, and a dwelling recedes with its joy.
While homes in delight depart from me.

وهمومُ صدرٍ كلّما دافعتُها

And worries in my breast, whenever I fend them off,
Cares, each time I drive them from my breast,
Vow never to budge for all eternity.
Remain, lifelong, and do not budge at all.

I cannot complain of them, out of fear,
I cannot complain of them, fearing exposure,
And unspoken sorrow wounds your heart more deeply.
Cares are not to be told to a stricken heart.

When I sought true brotherhood, none remained for me
Among them but the inveterate asker,
Save the questioner, weak of purpose.

From all those notorious for faults, each convinced
One notorious for his faults yet feels
That eyes do not notice his flaw;
Eyes should not see the faults in him.

A neighbor with whom I was never satisfied
To live beside, and a counselor who gives no honest counsel;
To have as neighbor, nor counselor true.

And people who cast goodness aside, with nowhere
Comrades who have cast virtue away,
To roam but in the valleys of ugly deeds.
And have no arena left but wickedness.

And it is an affliction that I—may you both be spared—
And worse, I have made intimate
Spend my evenings and mornings as my enemy wishes,
Those I should hate by night and day.

In anguish that does not lift, and calamity
In unremitting and oppressive anguish
That never ends, and darkness that never dawns.
That knows no end, perpetual gloom.

Hands pass my embers around, yet have found
My embers passed from hand to hand, finding
No scorching heat in them, while others' embers scorch.
No one to quench them, while others' embers flare.

When I resolved to be saved, no means remained
To escape upon but worn-out, exhausted camels.
To save me, save disgrace and vileness.

Say to the man borne at a gallop through a trackless waste
Say to him who prances vainly in battle,
By a white-blazed steed chosen by horsemen:
A gaze the lances have made their target.

Convey this—may you arrive—to our chief and leader,
Convey, you have conveyed, to our pillar and chief,
And the unfading ennobler of our earthly life:
Who has honored life for us, no guile in him.

Indeed, in your absence I am in pitch-black darkness,
Without you, in darkness I remain,
Since the one from whom I take light has left me.
When evening comes to me with no dawn.

شوقٌ إليك كما علمتَ مبرِّحُ
If life tastes sweet to me, it is made bitter
If life has savor, it is longing for you,
By agonizing longing for you, as you know.
As you know, that gives it savor and delight.

And I knew, when you sought—reluctantly—
You knew when you unwillingly drew near
My nearness, that I would gain nothing from your distance.
That distance from you profits me naught.

And since your departure, I have been driven away
I who was exiled after you departed
From everything desired, banished far off.
Am barred from all my soul desires.

Yet never opened for generosity.
Yet closed when kindness is asked.

What lightens hardships for me is that they
One who belittles adversity for me,
Draw near to mankind, while you are farthest from them.
You are farthest from it, I know.

If the arrows of fate assail you,
Let the arrows wound another's skin.
Let the arrows strike another's skin.

With our hearts entwined, we are not harmed
No harm to us if our hearts entwine,
By a desert lying between us, or a barren plain.
No rival comes between us or divides.

For the distant are present when there is love,
The further ones are present in affection,
And the near are far away without love.
While the nearer ones are outcast without love.

You have indeed shamed people who never attained
You have exposed a people who never attained
The rank you reached; excellence like yours puts others to shame.
The excellence you attained that faults expose.

You left us grasping after right that was
Your two hands, drinking absurdity at dusk and dawn.
In your hands, groping blindly for the morn.

And when the sons of Abd al-Rahim take up residence
When the clan of ʿAbd al-Raḥīm took the lead,
In a mountain valley, I stay among them and do not depart.
I could not leave them.

Swift to answer the cry for help; once they have fulfilled
Swift to defend their honor when defamed,
Battle's need, they are massive mountains.
They are mountains firm if war grows fierce.

I cannot bear to leave them, though I might
I have parted from those I was unwilling to leave.
Leave one whose loss would not distress me.

Away from you, I am a miser, fiercely tight-fisted.
From your company, I am one who hoards and hides.

A people who shielded me from evil, relentless in its purpose,
A folk who shore me up against evil, bent
And spared me adversity as it openly declared itself.
On evil, while distress flowed free.

If they disavow a shameful affair, they keep far away;
If they deny vile deeds, stand apart,
Or visit a noble abode at dawn, they visit it at dusk as well.
If they hasten to noble action, breathe free.

Full-grown steeds bring them to you.
Highbred steeds come to you with hooves bloodied.

A people once my haven, though floods
And a torrent too great for the broad, pebbled riverbed around us.
Of ills shook them, and me in them.

And white swords have their sheaths in armored warriors' crowns,
The egg-white gleams on the heights of Al-Kumah,
And brown spears are splashed with the blood of chests.
The sparrowhawk sprinkled from pools of Tarā'ib.

Absent from me, my tears will flow for you
For its tears pour forth until it sees him—
Until they see you, endlessly pour.

Greetings that never end, salutations
Whose well never runs dry, though all time passes.
Whose goal is far while my heart stays fixed.

I pardon time's offenses, but cannot
Do not pardon its sin in parting us.
Pardon that by our parting I was offended.
