And happiness, once it was secure for a man,
When good fortune came to a youth
and he had gained his wish from it, departed!
And he gained what he sought, it deserted him.

Each day I am in a calamity
with the blows of time, and in an ordeal.
With the vicissitudes of fate and its schemes.

Until it takes away my strength altogether.

It would have been without deception or trickery.

who continually shuns disgrace.
Who wards off harm from the vulnerable.

Nor do I walk the paths of suspicion.

The charms of a coquettish damsel
by the charms of a tender, full-figured woman.
Did not lead me into the fetters of passion.

I am resolute, never deviating for an instant
even a single one, from chastity's halter.
From the path of chastity.

To any side that earns not my pleasure or displeasure.

There is no difference, in keeping far from riding desire,
In avoiding the labyrinths of love
between me in old age and me in youthful ardor.
I do not distinguish between old and young.

and frivolity the side from which I recoil.
And the realm of frivolity my maturity.

Humiliation, then, for the soul when it rebels,
For the soul is base when it transgresses
and honor for the soul when it turns away.
And noble when it resists.

You are safe forever from my blame.

Able to show generosity in times of crisis.

I quell my rage, and when I am calm,
I leave anger for self-restraint.
I emerge from rage into tranquility.

And their consciousness is like death.

Erodes my prime and my life's springtime.

In it lies nothing of value.

When many share a burden.
