Is it for those whom the camels bore away

at forenoon, while love flew among them ahead of you,

that you grieved because they vanished? That is foolishness

for which you would be blamed, were your reason present.

When I denied love, one versed in it said:

“If you are not in love, why are you sighing?”

    They blame me, though love is mine, not theirs;

where among people can the longing lover find understanding?

O friend, at the dwelling whose people departed,

as though a herd fleeing across the wilderness,

not one of them inhabits the dwelling today,

nor among the valley-bend’s acacias is an evening talker.

Lend me, on the morning of parting, a glance of yours,

for our eyes have grown dim with tears.

Keep your secret to yourself, and leave us be,

for parting has laid our secrets bare.

Tell a beloved who feared I might grow weary:

“Your dwelling in my heart flourishes for all time.”

God help my heart that day in the ravine, when there appeared

from the ravine, before us, gazelle fawns and wild-cow calves.

We stood: tears dripped from his eyelids,

while other tears, checked by fear of watchers, hung in suspense.

    أوائل قلبي عنده والأواخرُ

    Within the herd was one filled, brimming with beauty;

with him are my heart’s beginnings and its endings.

I lavish wishes on him, while he is miserly,

and meet his estrangement with union, while he shuns me.

I love the soil of Najd, whose fragrance is wafted

to the caravan by a wavering, drifting evening breeze.

I delight, while the white she-camels hasten onward,

in a phantom from al-Zawra that visits in the night.

It visits while the riding-camels’ necks droop

from weariness, their bellies thirsty and lean.

To the King of Kings I sent forth, in praise,

rhymes that frequent the heights of glory and visit them.

Far-ranging, their swift course untouched by weariness,

nor does the traveler complain of their fatigue.

They carried to him, of my praise for his bounty

and his beneficence, what camels could not bear.

To where glory has settled, its numbers vast,

    and where ever-multiplying lordliness resides.

For you are the one who bestowed on me the favors

that remain manifest while the bright stars disappear.

Rare wonders no thought had anticipated,

nor had inward thoughts summoned them into hearts.

Through them I came to know people when they reached me:

a friend stood revealed, or an enemy baring his teeth.

One who praises them, yet fails to do justice

to their full measure, seems ungrateful even as he gives thanks.

Before you I had eluded kings, so there were no

jewels of my strung words for their crowns.

Nor had Taj al-Milla’s ears been occupied

by my verse; he did not know that I was a poet,

until he departed from me, as did whoever followed him,

and far-traveling verses carried my praise of your high rank.

Praise urged onward by noble gifts from your highness,

weighty upon necks, radiant and unspoiled.

Recounting them, I seem the owner of a perfume caravan

that a perfumer has halted in Darin’s market.

So forgive me what I neglected, and all that

the vanishing years let me waste.

And take from me today every poem,

    refined and polished by thought,

which, when recited, makes attentive listeners say: “Thus

are glorious deeds strung in praise of the glorious.”

The man beguiled by kingship knows that you

are his bulwark and barrier against all others,

and that, defending him against whoever seeks him, you are

    long spears or cleaving swords.

How often have the limbs of men who aspired

to kingship been shredded by your fangs and claws!

Before the passes that ascend to the heights—

the heights of kingship—a sinewy-armed lion crouches.

He governs the clans of humankind while at ease,

and lowers his eyes as if asleep, though he is watchful.

At dawn his dwelling stands in some pass on earth,

while his roars ring in the ears of the horizons.

Awe-inspiring: his dues are never withheld

by stalling, nor are commands disobeyed in his presence.

He mounts the great crests of affairs that none would

mount but a youth who courts danger.

In many a battle, its horizons dark with dust, nothing is seen

throughout its reaches but clashing spears,

or a hand swooping upon an opponent with death,

or blood dripping from a spear’s upper shaft.

You shone there while faces were darkened,

and advanced in valor while souls were fearful.

You led into it every sleek, free-striding mare,

her forepart and hindpart alike among the foremost racers.

When loosed among horses to run toward a goal,

she races until she no longer sees whom she races against.

May the dwellings never grow desolate without you, nor be emptied

of your names the assemblies and pulpits.

May time’s vicissitudes stray from you, and may your dwellings guard

against dreaded perils making them their habitual haunt.

May you go at evening and morning, sovereign over time,

and may destinies run among us as you desire.

May one useless in calamity be your ransom,

one who cannot endure what you endure.

His baseness was disguised for long, then revealed

by his own soul when excuses failed him.

May you be felicitated on Mihragan’s day, for it is

a season like garden blossoms, green and fresh.

It stands midway between cold and heat, with behind it

and before it scorching noons and piercing cold.

Remain the seat of glory, keeping your enemies on edge,

for barren is the mother of an age that does not please you.
