على كلّ حالٍ أنتِ قاسيةُ القلبِ

على كلّ حالٍ أنتِ قاسيةُ القلبِ

فلا عَذَلِي يُجدي عليّ ولا عَتْبي

فلا عَذَلِي يُجدي عليّ ولا عَتْبي

In every circumstance, you are hard-hearted.

You are still so cruel at heart

So neither my reproach nor my rebuke avails me.

My reproach and blame will not affect you

ولم أنْسها يومَ الفراقِ ووجهُها

ولم أنْسها يومَ الفراقِ ووجهُها

يُضيءُ لَنا خلفَ البراقعِ والحُجْبِ

يُضيءُ لَنا خلفَ البراقعِ والحُجْبِ

Nor have I forgotten her on the day of parting, when her face

I've not forgotten her face the day we parted

shone for us behind the face-veils and screens.

It shines on us from behind the veils

تَقولُ أَلا رِفقاً بقلبكَ في الهَوى

تَقولُ أَلا رِفقاً بقلبكَ في الهَوى

فقلتُ وهل لِي يومَ بينِكِ من قلبِ

فقلتُ وهل لِي يومَ بينِكِ من قلبِ

She says, "Ah, be gentle with your heart in love."

You say, be gentle with your heart in passion

I replied, "But have I any heart on the day of your departure?"

I say, is there a heart left in me towards you

ولولا الهَوى ما خارَ للعجْمِ مَعْجَمِي

ولولا الهَوى ما خارَ للعجْمِ مَعْجَمِي

ولا لانَ يوماً في أنامِلكم صَعبي

ولا لانَ يوماً في أنامِلكم صَعبي

And were it not for love, my mettle would not have weakened under testing,

If not for passion, my words would not be complex

nor would my stubborn nature ever have softened beneath your fingertips.

Nor would my veins flow in your soft hands

فَإن كنتُمُ تَعصون أمرِي تجنّياً

فَإن كنتُمُ تَعصون أمرِي تجنّياً

فأعْصى لأمري منكُمُ أبداً قلبي

فأعْصى لأمري منكُمُ أبداً قلبي

So if you disobey my command unjustly,

If you disobey me out of spite

then my heart is always more disobedient to my command than you.

Then my heart will disobey your wishes forever
