لَوَif اِنّكَindeed you عَرَّجتَstopped فيin منزلٍa dwelling
يَهونُis humbled العَزيزُthe mighty man بأَرجائِهِwithin its bounds
If you had stopped at a dwelling
If only you stayed in a house
where the mighty are humbled within its bounds,
Where the dear is cheap in its corners
وَبيءِpestilential المَواردِthe watering places لاnot يستفيقُrecovers
بهِthere القلبُthe heart والجسمُand the body منfrom دائِهِits sickness
whose watering places are pestilential; no recovery comes
And the incoming supplies do not awaken
there to heart or body from its sickness.
The heart and body from its illness
جَفاهُshunned it النعيمُbliss فَماso nothing إِنْat all (emphasis) بِهِin it
لِقاطنِهِfor its dweller غيرُexcept بَأْسائِهِits misery
Bliss has shunned it, so there is nothing within it
Luxury has abandoned it, so that
for its dweller but its misery.
Its inhabitant has nothing but his misery
فَياso, oh قُربَthe nearness ماwhat lies بَينbetween إِضحاكِهِits bringing laughter
لسنٍّto a tooth وَماand what lies بينَbetween إِبكائِهِits bringing tears
And oh, how short the span between the laughter it brings
Oh how close is the difference between its
to the teeth and the tears it brings!
Laughter one day and its weeping the next
كَأنّيَas though I فيهِin it أَخوa man of قَفرةٍa wilderness
يُزجّيurges onward كَليلاتِthe weary ones among أنضائِهِhis emaciated mounts
As though, within it, I were a man of the wilderness,
It's as if I live there with a barren brother
urging onward his weary, emaciated mounts;
Who gathers its few possessions
وَسارٍand a night traveler علىin a state of سَغَبٍhunger فيin القَواءِthe barren wilderness
بلاwithout زادِهِhis provisions وبلاand without مائِهِhis water
and a night traveler, hungry in the barren wilds,
And travels on infertile land without
without his provisions and without his water;
Provisions or water
وَذوand one afflicted with سَقَمٍsickness ملَّهُgrew tired of him عائدوهhis sickbed visitors
وَفاتَand came too late عِلاجُthe treatment أطبّائِهِof his physicians
and a sick man whose visitors have tired of him,
And one with an illness that has befallen him
and whose physicians' treatment has come too late.
And his doctors can no longer cure
فَقُلْso say للّذيto the one who ظَنَّthought أنّيthat I حَفَلْتcared
بِضَوضائهِabout his clamor يومَthe day of ضوْضائِهِhis clamor
So tell him who thought I cared
So say to him who thought I was preoccupied
about his clamor on the day of his clamor,
With his ruckus on the day of his ruckus
ومَنْand the one whom لاnot أُباليI care اِحتِقاراًout of contempt لهُfor him
بِإِصباحِهِabout his morning وبإمسائِهِand about his evening
and him whom I disdain, caring nothing
And I don't care about the contempt of one
for his morning or his evening:
In his morning or his evening
نَجوتَyou escaped وَلَكِنْbut بِنَقصٍbecause of a defect كَماjust as
أَجمّremained full and undrawn الغَديرُthe pool لأَقذائِهِbecause of its impurities
You escaped, but because of a defect, just as
You have survived but with a deficiency, just as
a pool remains full because of its impurities.
The rain pool gathers for its frogs
وَذَمُّand censure الفَتىthe young man مِثلُlike مَدحِpraise الفَتىthe young man
لأشكالِهِfor his peers وَلأكفائِهِand for his equals
And a man's censure, like a man's praise,
And the insult of a young man is like the praise of a young man
is for his peers and his equals.
For his forms and his peers
