لو كنت أملك للأقدار واقيةً

If I possessed a shield against fate,
If I had a shield against fate,
I would have kept from you, Abu al-Khattab, what came by night.
I would have protected you, O Abul Khattab, from its blows,

سقانِيَmade me drink المُرَّbitterness مِنfrom فقدِيكmy loss of you حينwhen سقىit gave drink
سقانِيَ المُرَّ مِن فقدِيك حين سقى
Indeed, time—and there is no redress against time—
Verily time and no affliction upon a time
made me drink the bitterness of my loss of you when it poured.
Gave me the bitter drink after losing you when it gave water.

How often you clothed branches, though they were withered,
How much you clothed the boughs when they withered
with water from your far-reaching influence, and with foliage.
With water from your outstretched, bountiful hand and leaves.

And how often you gave refuge, without reproach or ill will,
And how much you made flow without trouble or sorrow
to one holding fast to you in fear and clinging to you.
Clinging to you in fear and holding fast.

Some people attained and settled every high place,
but among men nothing like what you attained ever came to pass.
Yet what you attained among people never coincided.

You stored up nothing but praise and noble deeds,
You hoarded nothing but praise and magnanimity,
while they store up only gold and silver.
While they only hoard the fountain and the leaves.

حكمتَ في الدّهرِ لا رزقاً أصبتَ به

والأمرُ بعدك في الدنيا لمن رُزقا
You held sway over time, rather than merely gaining a livelihood through it;
You ruled time, gaining no provision from it,
after you, worldly power goes to whoever is favored with it.
And affairs after you belong to those provisioned.

You never turned aside to amusement or play,
So you turned not to vanity or play,
nor sent flattery in pursuit of your needs.
Nor sent for your needs insistently.

You governed kings, while others wished that they
You counseled kings, and the people wished
could govern common folk, yet never attained that ambition.
They had counseled, but never attained those heights.

You were the gateway to kings, and ever since
You were the gate to kings, but since
you tasted death, that gate has been barred and closed.
You tasted misfortune, that gate has shut and locked.

And you left nothing of the world and its adornments
after your loss but its shabby, worn-out remnants.
After losing you except its ruins taken by creation.

And in many a dark, bewildering plight, dim at both horizons,
Your state was the reddening of the two sides coming together,
you brought forth a dawn with lucid counsel.
You shone in it with clear, penetrating insight.

And many a position, perilous on every side, you held,
And in a position perilous in its dimensions you stood
while you scattered bright blades in shards between the two sides.
While the sword blades were strewn between them cleaving.

You thrust there with counsel while the spears lay shattered,
You stabbed with your view there, and the spear was straight,
and spear-thrusts tore open what in bodies had been joined.
And stabbing cleaves bodies whether high or low.

So they saw what you used to do
to a dissenter who strayed, or a renegade who broke away.
In one insolent or apostate straying away.

They slept, heedless of kingship, neglecting its defense,
They slept, neglecting to support the king,
while you alone drank deep of sleeplessness in its cause.
While you alone were wakeful supporting him.

You were true in its defense until you raised for it
You were sincere in supporting him until you established for him
its pillars; in any undertaking, a true man is one who proves true.
A pillar, and the noble one in the matter is the sincere one.

on a couch, you have become the companion of a sand dune.
You have become the treaty of a ruin upon the throne.

how could you accept a tunnel in a low-lying hollow?
How could you accept a collapse to become lowly?

They wanted you to join the most towering heights,
but do you see anyone who has reached the star's abode?
Can you see anyone reaching the abode of a star?

I trusted you with what I did not fear failing,
though often one who trusted has returned disappointed.
And many a time those who trusted failed.

And you were my fortress, strong, in every quandary,
an impregnable fortress and cool, abundant water.
A cool, flowing water in the heat of afflictions.

So which eye, that did not shed tears for you,
and what heart has not burned in sorrow's fire?
And which heart has not burned from the fire of anxiety?

Had you looked upon us after we were parted,
you would have seen what you stitched together in us torn open.
You would have seen those whom you nurtured split open.

How grievous to me that you should lie far
Honor me by sacrificing for some wretches among us
from us, your pledge forfeited in death's hand,
While your pledge is locked in the grip of misery.

And that the peerless one see you amid desolation,
by one who would meet death from fear if you appeared to him.
He who, had you occurred to him, would meet misery cleft.

If you touch the dust with a gown,
yet so often you rested it upon al-Ayyuq.
You have long been touching the noblest dress.

And if, dead, you touch the soil, they were never content—
And if you touched the earth dead, you never accepted
your breastbones—with brocade or fine silk.
From it brocades or silk.

And if you lie still, listening to death, how often
And if you dwelled silent to fate, with what
in former days you were the loftiest speaker ever to speak.
You had become the most eloquent speaker speaking.

You attacked the heights, the text, and the neck.

And if you passed away, your hand left
among us goodness that has not passed away or vanished.
Among us the beauty that did not pass but set out.

So no health is left to us after his fall,
So we have no health after his death,
nor medicine to preserve a sufferer's last breath.
Nor a cure for one whose life is fading.

He was none other than a star that vanished from a horizon,
He was nothing but a star who disappeared from the horizon,
and a mighty bucket that poured forth for humankind.
And nothing but a glorious record for mankind that flowed.

The master of all bonds has departed;
The owner of lightning bolts in their entirety is gone,
so, at his death, forget anyone who holds the bonds.
So forget, at his death, the one who owns the lightning.

Nor did decrepitude give you to drink mouthfuls or sips.

Go, your bounty has enabled you to possess
men's servitude, while you have provisioned me with burning grief.
The souls of men, and you have provided me burning thirst.

A grave you dwelt in shall remain

Filled with the scent of life diffusing fragrance.

And if I pass by a tomb you resided in
after passing by, I turn my neck toward you.
I will crane my neck toward you after passing it.
