إنif عاقبsucceeded الشّيبgray hair السّوادَblack hair بمَفْرقيat my hair's parting
فاللّيلfor night يتلوهfollows it الصّباحُthe morning الواضحُbright
If gray hair has succeeded black hair at my parting,
Though grey hairs punish blackness at my temples,
For night is followed by the bright morning.
Dawn's radiance still follows the night.
مَنْwhoever أخْطَأَتْهُmissed him وقدand already رمتْfired قوسُthe bow الرّدىof death
تبيضُّturn white منهof his مفارقٌhair-partings ومسائحُand locks of hair
Whoever death's bow misses after it has fired,
When the bow of destruction misses its mark
His hair-partings and locks turn white.
Some tresses and temples still whiten.
لوif كانthere were للّيلِfor the night البهيمِpitch-dark فضيلةٌa merit
لمnot تُدْنَbe brought near منهto it مقابِسٌtorches ومصابحُand lamps
If pitch-dark night had any merit,
Had the ignorant night any merit,
No torches or lamps would be brought near it.
No lamps or wicks would lessen its gloom.
البيضُwhite hairs لِلْعينينِto both eyes وجهٌa face ضاحكُsmiling
والسّودُand black hairs للعينينto both eyes وجهٌa face كالحُscowling
White hairs are a smiling face to the eyes,
Whiteness is a laughing face for the eyes,
And black hairs, to the eyes, a scowling face.
Blackness a gloomy face for the eyes.
وأَشدُّand stronger منthan جَذَعِa young horse الجِيادِamong the steeds إذاwhen جرتْthey run
جَرْياًin running وأصبرُهُنَّand the most enduring of them نَهْدٌsturdy قارحُa fully mature horse
And stronger than a young steed, when horses run,
Swifter than the trunks of chargers at full gallop,
In running, and the most enduring of them, is a sturdy, full-grown horse.
More enduring than the pliant spearshaft’s thrust.
والبُزْلُand mature camels تغتالُeat up الطّريقَthe road سليمةًunscathed
وعلىand on الطّريقِthe road منamong البِكارِthe young camels طلائحُexhausted ones
And mature camels eat up the road unscathed,
The tent ropes ambush the road though it be safe,
While on the road lie exhausted young camels.
While searchers range the road for lost maidens.
