شَكرتكَI thanked You رَبّيmy Lord مَعْwith يَقينيmy certainty بأنَّنِيthat I
قَصيرُdeficient القُوىin strength والبّطشِand might عنin reaching سِلَعِthe wares of الشكرِgratitude
I thanked You, my Lord, though certain that I
I thanked You, my Lord, while knowing
lack the strength and might to attain gratitude’s wares.
That I lack the strength and power for adequate thanks.
فإنْso if كانis شكريmy thanks وهْوَand it is ذاthis مُتَقَبَّلاًaccepted
فمَنٌّthen a favor علىupon مَنٍّa favor وبِرٌّand kindness علىupon بِرِّkindness
So if my thanks, such as they are, are accepted,
If my inadequate thanks are accepted,
then it is favor upon favor, and kindness upon kindness.
Then it is a gift upon a gift, and kindness upon kindness.
وَأَعلَنتُand I proclaimed شُكريmy thanks وَهوَthough it is عنكtoward You مُقصّرٌfalling short
لأخرجso that I may emerge فيamid النَّعماءblessings عنfrom حَيِّزِthe realm of الكُفرِingratitude
And I proclaimed my thanks, though they fall short of Your due,
I announced my inadequate thanks, though they fall short of You,
so that, amid blessings, I may leave the realm of ingratitude.
To emerge from the realm of ingratitude.
وإنّيand indeed I لأرجوsurely hope أنْthat تكونwill be عطيّتِيmy gift
علىaccording to قدرthe worth of مَنthe one who أولىbestowed العطيَّةَthe gift لاnot قدريmy worth
And I indeed hope that the gift I receive will be
And I hope that my gift
in keeping with the worth of Him who bestowed the gift, not my own.
Will match the Giver of gifts, not my own worth.
