I stripped off the robes of frivolity, and they shrank away;
I have stripped off the clothes of frivolity,
And cares turned me gray before old age.
And worries have whitened me before whitening.

And I once lived in the shade of youth, in bliss;
I was once in the shade of youth, enjoying blessings -
And what bliss endures for men?
What bliss for men can last?

And people know, if they do not deceive themselves,
People know, if they are not deceiving themselves,
that a healthy man is made sick by gray hair;
That the gray-haired are infirm, though seeming healthy.

And indeed, a man rich in love—whose guest is
He who is rich in passions - his only lodging
gray hair—is bereft of both palms, destitute.
Is gray hair, bereft of both kinds of comfort.
