شَننتَyou poured بهنّin them عليَّupon me السّروراjoy
I remembered you in the secluded hours in which
I remembered you in the moments of solitude
you showered joy upon me.
That brought me immense joy
وكنتand you were لدَيجُورِهِنّto their deep darkness الصّباحَthe morning
وفيand amid سَهَكاتٍfoul odors لهنّof theirs العبيراperfume
You were morning to their deep darkness,
You were like the radiant morning
and perfume amid their foul odors.
In the meadows full of fragrance
فضاقتْso grew cramped عليَّfor me سُهوبُthe plains الدّيارthe lands
وصارتْand became سهولتُهنّtheir smoothness الوعوراrough terrain
So the plains of the land closed in on me,
The plains became constricted around me
and their level ground turned rugged.
And their spaciousness turned difficult
وأظلمَand it grew dark بينِيbetween me وبينand between الأنامhumankind
وماand not كنتI was منfrom قبلbefore إلّاexcept البَصيراclear-sighted
And darkness fell between me and humankind,
Darkness fell between me and people
though before I had been clear-sighted.
Though before I was quite perceptive
وَطالَand grew long عليّfor me الزّمانُtime القصيرُshort
وكانand was الطّويلُlong time عليَّfor me القصيراshort
And short spans of time grew long for me,
Time became long though it was short
while long spans had once seemed short to me.
And the long now turned short
فَهاso here أَناI am منكwithout you خليّempty اليَدينboth hands
وفيكَand concerning you كليلَblunted الأمانِيhopes حسيراexhausted
So here I am, empty-handed without you,
So here I am, hands empty of you
and, concerning you, my hopes are blunted and I am spent.
Lost in sorrow and futile wishes
فقدتُكI lost you فقدَthe loss of الزّمانtime الحبيبِbeloved
إليَّto me وفقديand my loss of الشّبابَyouth النّضيراblooming
I lost you as I lost the days dear
Losing you was like losing my beloved time
to me, and as I lost youth in its bloom.
And losing my flourishing youth
وهوّنand made light of رُزءَكthe loss of you مَنwhoever لمdid not يُحِطْfully grasp

And your loss was belittled by those who did not grasp
Belittle your loss, one who does not know
that I wrestle with its hardship.
That I face the unendurable because of it
فَظنّواso they supposed وَماand not عَلِمواthey knew أنّهthat it
صغيرٌsmall وماand not كانit was إلّاexcept كَبيراgreat
So they supposed, without knowing, that it
They thought, without knowing, it was small
was slight, though it was nothing but immense.
While it was, in fact, enormous

So tell the one who, on the road to death,
Say to one on the path of pigeons
tends full moons and raises lofty palaces,
Herding the young and raising palaces

and is heedless of death's pounces,
Neglecting the suddenness of death
which spare the limbs and strike the throats:
Leave lamenting and pour light

How long will you remain, though you are free,
How long will you remain free
in the hands of greed, a captive slave?
Yet a slave in greedy hands?

If I linger, I hold back the saddles;
If I walk, I walk slowly
and when I draw near, I approach delusion.
And if I come close, I near illusion

If you attain all you seek
then you have gained only the paltry and contemptible.
You attain nothing but the insignificant

And time has taken only what
Time takes only what it gives back
it gave back—so how can you blame the lender?
So why blame the borrower?

Sharp swords and ferocious lions?

Me answer the call and bare my conscience?

When I am betrayed, I find loyalty in you,
A loving brother, I took loyalty from you
and when I thirst, I drink deeply of your sweet water.
And when called, hastened like an echo

How many nights were you my companion
in its darkness, a comforting presence or companion in night-talk.
Consoling me in its darkness?

May Allah water your grave among graves

With clouds and surround it with rain

Its flashes of lightning dress it
so you take it for juice pressed from gore.
You'd think it an impending rain
