أمُرُّI pass علىby الأجداثِthe graves فيin كلّevery ليلةٍnight
وقلبيand my heart بمنto those who فيهاare in them رهينٌheld captive معلّقُattached
I pass by the graves every night,
I pass the nights in anguish, while my heart
And my heart is captive to those within, bound to them.
Is captive to the one in that dark tomb confined.
وَأَقريهمُand I offer them منّيfrom me السّلامَgreetings وبينناand between us
رِتَاجٌa closed gate ومسدولٌand a drawn-down covering منof التربthe earth مُطبَقُsealed shut
And I offer them my greetings; between us lie
Convey my greetings to them - between us lies
A closed gate and a covering of earth, drawn down and sealed shut.
A barrier and mound of earth, compact.
ولوand if أنّنِيthat I أنصفتُI treated fairly مَنْthe one who فيin ترابهاtheir soil
لماwould not have رحتُI departed عنهfrom him مُطلقاًfree وهوwhile he موثَقُbound
And had I treated fairly the one in their soil,
If I were just to those within that grave
I would not have left him, myself free while he lay bound.
I would not leave, not bound as they are bound.
وأنّand moaned لهfor him منّيfrom me قليلاًa little جوانحٌribs
خَفَقْنَthey throbbed وعينٌand an eye بالدّموعwith tears تَرَقْرَقُwells up
And for him a little moan came from my ribs,
For them my wings beat low, my eyes yet gleam
Which throbbed, and from an eye welling with tears.
And overflow with tears that freely stream.
