أُحِبُّI love مَنْone who ليسthere is no حظٌّgood fortune فيin مودّتِهِhis affection
وَليسَand there is nothing إلّاexcept الهَوىpassion والهمُّand worry والكَمَدُand anguish
I love one in whose affection there is no good fortune;
and there is nothing but passion, worry, and anguish.
يَسوؤُهُit displeases him أنّهthat he is همِّيmy concern ويُغضِبُهُand it angers him
أنِّيthat I شكوتُcomplained إليهto him بعضَsome of ماwhat أجدُI feel
It displeases him that he is my concern, and it angers him
that I complained to him of some of what I suffer.
ياO صاحبيmy friend لاdo not تَلُمْنيblame me فيfor هوىًa passion هجمتْassailed
بهwith it عليَّupon me الَّتيthat which ماnot ردّهاrepelled it أحَدُanyone
O my friend, do not blame me for a passion with which I was assailed
by that which no one has ever repelled.
وافىit came ولمand did not تَسعَhasten ليfor me رِجْلٌa foot لألحقَهُso I might reach it
حِرصاًout of eagerness عليهِfor it ولمand was not تُمدَدstretched out إليهِtoward it يَدُa hand
It came, though no foot of mine had hastened to reach it
out of eagerness for it, nor had a hand been stretched toward it.
فإنْso if يكنthere is لكَfor you صبرٌpatience فيهin it أوor جَلَدٌfortitude
فليسthen there is no لِيfor me فيin الهوىpassion صبرٌpatience ولاand no جَلَدُfortitude
So if you have patience in it, or fortitude,
then in passion I have neither patience nor fortitude.
