I hid from Asma what had been openly known,

on a day of ruined campsites, traces, and old camp remains.

Were it not for the nights of al-Khayf, we would have no

heart held in pledge to the love of beautiful women.

There appeared to us, from you, over Mina's valley,

a rainstorm of passion—would that it had never appeared!

You did not intend to stone the jamarat; rather,

you pelted us, instead of the jamarat, with temptations.

How often we were ensnared there and became its slaves—

by curling hair and by a lovely face.

Would that the camp-folk who left us at al-Liwa,

after plunging us into love, had never departed!

And if only that company had graciously joined its cord

to hearts unable to bear the burden of favors.

You slept, while our eyes have not known,

since you departed, the taste of sleep.

A flash of lightning from me startled you, Asma,

lighting the space between sideburns and chin.

Do not recoil from it or find it strange:

it is a dawn that was darkness for so long.

    وأيُّ ثاوٍ في اللّيالِي ما ظَعَنْ

    A dweller went far when time bore him away;

and what dweller through the nights has not departed?

If it has revived forbearance and reason in us,

it has slain jest and merriment.

How often it held one brimming with youth

back from lofty deeds, yet freed the decrepit old man.

We are a people with no dwelling

except the summits of firm-rooted mountains and their peaks.

We acquire only, for the outbreaks of battle,

    brown lances, sword-blades, and stallions.

From us are the Prophet and his appointed successor, his peer,

    then al-Batul, Husayn, and Hasan.

Our uncle is al-Abbas—who has an uncle like ours?

His illustrious sons are the lamps of the age,

each with a dreaded sting, to whom submitted

kingdoms that had not yet submitted to Dhu Yazan.

They trailed armies and advancing hosts behind them, just as

the Yemenites trailed the hems of good fortune.

They bound their brows with glory, when

the kings of Lakhm bound theirs with gold in Shadan.

How many a religious distinction is ours

that shod all Nizar with Yemen's heads!

If you do not know us, inquire about us:

ask the unsheathing of bright blades and the brandishing of supple spears,

and every raging battle with the mutterings of a

    complainer, sighing to the one he complains to and groaning;

    dust-clouded, its earth red,

where a man has neither eye nor ear.

On the day of battle, we count as our noblest

one who strikes his adversary with a sword and thrusts,

and one whom you see afraid until, when

    he plunges into the fray amid terror, he feels secure;

and one who does not flag when fighting breaks out,

or who gives abundant bounty without vaunting his favor.

Obscenity has never entered our houses,

nor has suspicion ever pointed toward them.

They hold no infatuation or youthful folly,

nor is amusement or frivolity found within them.

They are supports for the poor and gateways to wealth,

shelter from fear and honor for the downtrodden.

None among us suffers a surfeit from food,

nor have we ever been faulted for what gluttony brings about.

So tell a people who boast against us before

shaking the grime from their reputations:

Where are those people's heads beside the hollows of our soles

in glory? Or where is a lowland beside the peaks?

How can you trade arrows with us when you are unarmored?

Or how can you face blade-edges without a shield?

You had indeed once made a truce with us,

then you warped the truce with smoldering rancor.

And if your rods were fashioned for us

from knotted wood, we are without knots.

And if your hide spends the night foul-smelling,

no hide among us has ever been foul-smelling.

You poured your hatred upon us; how often

has a man poured upon his people what had never been poured!

How often you came to drink our clear water, while we drank

of your clear water only brine that had gone stale.

We have never ceased to carry burdens of yours

that even sturdy camels proved unable to bear.

Leave your outward selves to us; then put

your ugliness, if you wish, in what is hidden.

What would it cost one who grudges kindness

to a brother, if he grudged ugly conduct instead?

    ولم أرِدْ تقويمَكمْ بَريَ السَّفَنْ

    Were it not for my contempt for you, I would have pared you down;

I did not mean to straighten you with a rasp's scraping.

    وحاذروا رَبَّ بيانٍ ولَسَنْ

    Do not fear the wielder of a keen sword;

fear the master of clear expression and eloquence.

A man perishes, but his speech is immortal,

as age after age passes over it.

Leave to the sons of wealth their worldly life,

for whoever scorns this wealth will not be abased.

Ease lies only in forsaking wealth,

and money brings worry and sorrow to discerning minds.

They are alike—and time is the brother of change—

plenty and dearth, leanness and fatness.

Nor can one be saved from a death to which

fate has led one, by a hoarder's wealth,

nor by lances or combat with sword-edges,

nor by horses, coats of mail, or shields.

    فحيثُ يعدوك الأذى هو الوَطنْ

    And do not remain amid harm in a homeland;

your homeland is wherever harm passes you by.

For the dwelling of a man with pride

is either the sky, soaring high, or the grave.
