How often are we disappointed, and our hopes prove false,

while people graze at ease in the abode of delusion?

There are thirsty circlers never quenched, and unadorned ones

who never gain adornment, and glitter and deceit.

Every day calamities strike a blow

against us, and death's command is obeyed.

And when doom hunts down a young man, it is as though

there had been neither reprieve nor enjoyment.

Death has greater mastery over mortals; mere pretexts are

    this sickness and these pains.

And when we know that parting awaits everyone

we love, every greeting is a farewell.

Doom, O you who seek to ward it off, is not

something against which coats of mail are woven.

And when doom seeks souls, then

it simply races onward, and combat is in vain.

Sharp sword blades can no longer cut,

and the long, stiff spears are reeds.

Why am I beguiled each day by wishes

of life, and bought and sold by desire?

kings, the lords, and the followers.

Those who retreat are those who advance when

their appointed end summons them; the slow are swift.

Time stabs with death, not with spears,

killing outright; no blood is sold there.

It spares and destroys, then strips away while haggling,

against our will: it clothes us and strips us bare.

It gives singly; if its giving comes double

by mistake, its taking back is fourfold.

and among those sated with food are hungry ones.

Tell the man who hoarded treasures, whose concern is

amassing, piling high, and storing away:

Did you not know that what you secured

is a carcass, wasted in the hands of calamities?

And you thought what you deposited in the belly of the earth

was a secret; yet an undisclosed secret is disclosed.

Ruin upon an abode that has told its dwellers

there is no hope of a long stay!

Everyone sold their bliss for its misery,

in a cheated man's bargain; had they known, they would not have sold.

And when they make excuses to those who blame them

for greed, they say, 'What you see is our nature.'

Look, then, at one whose aim is his own ease

in life: how ambitions wear him down!

and whose noble deeds rose height upon height?

Each with his head wrapped, obeying no

mortal, and obeyed in every affair.

They passed away, and after unassailable might were left

with nothing but earth and bare ground.

And they were driven from the buildings they had raised

by this treacherous giver and withholder.

I have indeed been bereaved; everyone not struck dead by

death's arrow is visited by bereavement.

though I had lived long while others bore the terror.

And a companion—when I had grown used to union with her,

the severer, the relentless cutter, struck her.

And if she has fallen, how many have fallen in this

green heaven—gleaming stars lost to us!

Would that the one who resolved to depart without warning

had never possessed the resolve to part!

Indeed, you led the way in chastity and piety,

and behind you trail the weary and the limping.

May the graves, the graves of earth, be spacious for you,

and may glistening rain return often to your grave.

    فالأرضُ متلافٌ لها مِضياعُ

    In you, I entrusted the earth with the finest treasure;

yet the earth destroys it and squanders it.

And I paid you your due when I placed you in the sanctuary of

a people whose dwellings lie this side of bliss.

A precinct of God's household, the household of His Prophet,

before which regions and lands have prostrated themselves.

Time parted us, not knowing what was between us,

and time is ever parting us and bringing us together.
