ضنَّ عنّي بالنَّزرِ إذْ أنا يقظا

ضنَّ عنّي بالنَّزرِ إذْ أنا يقظا

نُ وأعطى قليلَه في مَنامي

نُ وأعطى قليلَه في مَنامي

He withheld even a little from me while I was awake,

He denied me with little, though I'm awake

and gave me that little in my sleep.

And gave me a little in my dream

زَوْرَةٌ عاجَلَتْ وما هي إلّا الز

زَوْرَةٌ عاجَلَتْ وما هي إلّا الز

زورُ سُقماً مُبرِّحاً من سَقامِ

زورُ سُقماً مُبرِّحاً من سَقامِ

A visit that came in haste—and it was nothing but

An urgent fantasy, yet it was nothing but an illusion

falsehood—a tormenting sickness born of sickness.

An illness swiftly cured of all sickness

وَاِلتَقينا كَما اِشتَهينا ولا عي

وَاِلتَقينا كَما اِشتَهينا ولا عي

بَ سوى أنّ ذاك في الأحلامِ

بَ سوى أنّ ذاك في الأحلامِ

And we met as we wished, with no flaw

And we met as we wished, with no fault

save that it was in dreams.

Except that it was in dreams

وإذا كانتِ المُلاقاةُ ليلاً

وإذا كانتِ المُلاقاةُ ليلاً

فاللّيالي خيرٌ من الأيّامِ

فاللّيالي خيرٌ من الأيّامِ

And if the meeting is at night,

And if the meeting was at night

then nights are better than days.

Then nights are better than days

وبلغتُ المرامَ آيسَ ما كُنْ

وبلغتُ المرامَ آيسَ ما كُنْ

تُ على النّأيِ من بلوغِ المَرامِ

تُ على النّأيِ من بلوغِ المَرامِ

And I attained my wish when I was most despairing,

I attained my hopes, though I had

in separation, of attaining that wish.

Despaired of attaining my hopes from afar
