He said to an aloof one who, whenever asked

    for union, grew more withholding:

Would that he might grow in kindness,

just as he grows in beauty.

We have donned, from the burning anguish of loving

you, what wore us out and wasted us.

May God never let us see in you

what you have seen in us.

The spiteful foe attained through separation

    what he had wished for.

So, by love's sanctity, he did not tell you the truth—

the one who brought you word about us.

Had the reproacher known that I

would not heed him, he would not have troubled himself.

I gave no reproach for love

    permission to reach my ear.

Was it, do you think, out of sound judgment

that your phantom visited us late at night?

It brought us no benefit; strange is

a deceiver that imposes a debt of gratitude.

The phantom is only like an utterance—

empty, with no meaning in it.

How often have we seen something false

ease the anguish of one tormented!
