جرّعنِيhe made me drink حُبّهlove for him وباعدنيand kept me far away

فلمso did not أنلْI attain وصلَهunion with him ولمand did not أكدِI come close
فلم أنلْ وصلَه ولم أكدِ
He made me drink love for him and kept me far away.
He made me drink his love but kept me far away
So I did not attain union with him, nor did I even come close.
I could not attain his presence or get close
وزارنيand he visited me قبلbefore أنْthat تملّكنِيhe took possession of me
وزارني قبل أنْ تملّكنِي
فصرتُso I became عبداًa slave لهto him فلمْthen did not يَعُدِhe return
فصرتُ عبداً له فلمْ يَعُدِ
And he visited me before he took possession of me.
He visited me before he could possess me
So I became his slave, and he returned no more.
So I became his slave but he did not return
يضحكُhe smiles عنrevealing لؤلؤٍpearls فإنbut if يكنis الthe
يضحكُ عن لؤلؤٍ فإن يكن ال
لؤلؤpearls ذاhaving صُفرةٍa yellow tinge فعَنْthen revealing بَرَدِhailstones
لؤلؤ ذا صُفرةٍ فعَنْ بَرَدِ
He smiles, revealing pearls; but if the

ولستُand I am not أرضىcontent with تشبيهَlikening لُقيَتِهِmeeting him
ولستُ أرضى تشبيهَ لُقيَتِهِ
بساعةِto an hour of الأمنِsafety أوor جنَىthe harvest of الشَّهَدِhoney in the comb
بساعةِ الأمنِ أو جنَى الشَّهَدِ
And I am not content to liken meeting him
Nor am I pleased to compare his face
to an hour of safety or a harvest of honey.
