سقانِيhe gave me drink ولَمand not أَستَسْقِهِI asked him for drink فضلَthe bounty خيرِهِof his goodness
فَلَمso not يَسقنِيhe gave me drink إِلّاexcept الذُّعافَdeadly poison المصَرَّداundiluted
He gave me the bounty of his goodness to drink, though I had not asked him for it;
He gave me drink without my asking, out of his bounty's excess.
Yet he gave me nothing to drink but undiluted deadly poison.
Yet he gave me only tears violently pouring.
وَماand not زالceased يدعونِيhe invites me إلىto دارِthe abode وصلِهِof union with him
فلمّاbut when دنوتُI approached الدّارَthe house ولّىhe turned away وعَرَّداand fled
And he kept inviting me to the abode of union with him;
He kept calling me to the abode of his union,
But when I approached the house, he turned away and fled.
but when I drew near the abode he turned away pulling back.
فماذاthen what علىupon مَنthe one who خاننِيbetrayed me فيin ودادِهhis love
إذاif لمnot يكنْthere was منهfrom him الوِدادُlove تودّداhe showed affection
What would it cost the one who betrayed me in his love,
What can be done with one who betrayed me in his love
To show affection, if he had no love to give?
if affection was never from him affectionately shown?
ولوand if كانhe were يجنيhe did wrong مخطئاًby mistake لعذرتُهُI would have excused him
ولكنّهbut he يجنِيdoes wrong عليَّagainst me تعمّداdeliberately
Had he wronged me by mistake, I would have excused him;
Had he been one who erred, I'd make excuse for him,
But he wrongs me deliberately.
but he wrongs me intentionally and with purpose.
وَإنِّيَand indeed I ممّنْamong those who إِنif نَباshrank away عنهfrom him منزلٌa dwelling
وأنكرَand he disliked مثواهhis lodging نآهhe left it فأبعداthen went far away
And I am one who, if a dwelling spurns him,
I am one who, if an encampment turns him away,
And finds his lodging uncongenial, leaves it and goes far away.
and its dwellers deny him lodging, wanders on into the distances.
