Have you not heard the thicket's doves when they sang?
Have you not heard the cooing of the doves as they sang,
They sang, unaware that I was among those they wounded.
Unaware that I am one of those they've wounded.

I had not asked them for what they sang this morning;

yet many have gained what they desired without requesting it.
Yet many attain what they desire without asking.

My eyelids are burdened with sorrows
and know no closing as they watch for dawn.
That know no sleep as they await dawn.

The sick one you afflicted has not recovered.
"The sick man you healed cannot be cured."

Jest has become earnest with me through the rejection that afflicted me;
Jesting has truly pained me with rejection,
and often one who jested has dealt earnestly with others.
Though jesting has often delighted people.

From a descending misfortune or departing comfort?

my eyelid is sore over you, wounded by my tears for you.
My eyelids have been wounded by my tears for you.

Fire in my heart, and water from desire that flows.

You have blamed a heart fettered with love.

Had it accepted advice, it would have taken advice!

The drinker of ruddy wine from brimming cups sobers up,
He is wise who drinks the clear wine in gulps,
but of love's drinker no one can say, 'He has sobered.'
While the drinker of love is too weary to be called wise.

It for its youth, but it has left.

Though the hair on my head has turned white with youth,
that urges me to defy whoever blames and censures me.
Inciting, by my disobedience, those who blame and find fault.

unmixed bitter aloes, did not come at midmorning.
Sorrows in draughts, not as a happy gift.

Of the separation whose afflictions I prepared for.

I love a moon from the living that does not rise for me,

And a desert gazelle I wish would come to me.

But now my patience and resolve are erased.

And dawn in the fist of darkness not yet shining.

The glimmer of a flashing lightning that flashes.

وخلتُand I thought أنّكُمُthat you تجزونَنِيwould repay me حَسَناًwith good
فالآنbut now أوْسعتمونِيyou have heaped upon me منكمُfrom yourselves القُبَحاvileness
I thought you would repay me with good,
I would have barked like the dogs of the neighborhood if they barked!
but now you have heaped your vileness upon me.
No water-drawers would have quenched you from the water spouts,
فَلاso do not تَظنّواsuppose اِصطِلاحاًreconciliation أَنْthat يَكونthere be لناfor us
فَلمfor did not يدعleave ماwhat أَتَيتمْyou did بَينناbetween us صُلُحاpeace
Do not imagine there can be reconciliation between us,
Nor would you have attained when people attained.
for what you did left no peace between us.
Do not be spacious toward me with shelter or dwelling,
وَلوand if جزيتُكُمُI repaid you سوءاًevil بسَوْءتِكُمْfor your vile deed
لَكُنتُthen I would be أنْبِحُbarking at كلبَthe dog of الحيِّthe tribe إنْif نَبَحاit barked
If I repaid you evil for your vile deed,
Spreading what you desire while I shrink!
I would bark back at the tribe's dog whenever it barked.
You would not have found relief in times of distress,
وَلاand may not سَقَتكمْwater you منَfrom الأنواءِthe rain-stars ساقيةٌa watering shower
ولاand may not نَشَحْتُمْyou drink إذاwhen ماemphatic particle معشرٌa people نَشَحاdrinks
May no shower from the rain-stars water you,
Or attained joy in times of ease.
nor may you drink when others drink.
وَلاand may not يَكنbe عَطَنٌa camel resting-ground مِنكمْof yours ولاnor وَطَنٌa homeland
مُتّسعاًspacious بالّذيwith what تَهْوَوْنَyou desire مُنفسِحاexpansive
May neither a camel resting-ground of yours nor a homeland
be broad and spacious with what you desire.
وَلاand may not لَقيتمْyou find بضرّاءٍin adversity لكمْof yours فَرَجاًrelief
ولاand may not أصبتمyou obtain بسرّاءٍin prosperity بكمْbefalling you فَرَحاjoy
May you find no relief in your adversity,
nor find joy in your prosperity.
