قِفاhalt, you two بيwith me عَلىbeside تِلكَthose الطّلولِruins الرّثائثِtattered
مُحِينَeffaced بنَسْجِby the weaving of المُعصِراتِthe rainclouds المواكثِlingering
Halt with me, you two, beside those tattered ruins,
Stand with me where the ruins lie,
effaced by the weaving of lingering rainclouds.
Where the passing caravans mourn.
وَلاand do not تَسأَلواask عَنabout اِصطِبارٍendurance عهِدتُماyou two knew
فَقَدfor indeed بانَit departed عنّيfrom me بِاِنتِهاكِthrough the ravaging of الحوادثِcalamities
And do not ask about the endurance you two once knew;
Ask me not for steadfastness now
for it has left me under the ravages of calamities.
When fate's onslaughts make me so forlorn.
كَأنَّas though فُؤاديmy heart بِالنّوىthrough separation لَعِبتْtoyed بهِwith it
نُيوبُthe fangs of أُسودٍlions أوor مخالبُthe claws of ضابثِa clutching beast
As though my heart, in separation, were toyed with
My heart played with aspirations
by lions' fangs or a clutching beast's claws.
To be mangled by the claws of wolves or lions.
أُجَوِّلُI let roam فيamong الأَطلالِthe ruins نَظرةَthe gaze of عابثٍa trifler
وَماand not أَناI حزناًin grief واِشتِياقاًand longing بِعابثِa trifler
I let a trifler's gaze wander among the ruins,
Like a wanton I roam 'mid the ruins
yet, in grief and longing, I am no trifler.
Yet am neither joyful nor sad in my sighing.
كَأنِّيas though I وَقَدand already سارَتْdeparted مطيُّthe riding camels of حُدوجِهِمْtheir howdahs
أُلاطِمُI battle موجَthe waves of اللُّجَّةِthe deep المتلاطِثِcrashing
As though I, when their howdah-bearing camels departed,
As though I - when their camel litters departed -
were battling the crashing waves of the deep.
Battled the waves of a surging, foam-flecked sea.
فَللّهِso, to God حِلميmy forbearance يومَon the day مرَّتْpassed رِكابُناour riding camels
علىin عَجَلٍhaste منهاon their part برِمْثِby the saltbush of العناكِثِal-ʿAnākith
God, what forbearance was mine the day our riding camels passed,
My patience on the day our tribe migrated,
in their haste, by the saltbush of al-ʿAnākith.
Riding their mares swift as leaping gazelles!
وَودّand wished فُؤاديmy heart أنَّهنُّthat they رَوائثٌwere lingering
وَهُنّand they بماby how يُحفَزْنَthey are spurred onward غيرُnot روائثِlingering
My heart wished that they would linger,
My heart wished they were but passing mirages
but, spurred onward as they were, they did not linger.
Not urged on by reality's goading stick.
جَحدتُI denied الهَوىlove لَمّاwhen سُئِلتُI was asked عَنِabout الهَوىlove
وَكَمْand how many غِرّةٍan unguarded lapse مِنfrom ذيone with شَجىًheartache فيamid المباعثِstirring impulses
I denied love when I was questioned about love,
When asked of love, I denied my passion,
and how often a sorrowful man is caught unguarded when stirred!
So many victims of love met disaster in following it.
وَآليتُand I swore خَوفَin fear of الشرِّharm ألّاthat not أُحبَّكمْI love you
وَتِلكَand that لعَمْرby the life of اللَّهِGod حِلفةُthe oath of حانثِan oath-breaker
And, fearing harm, I swore that I would not love you,
Yet I swore to shun love and its evil -
yet that, by God's life, was an oath-breaker's oath.
A vain oath which brought me only shame!
بَنيsons of عَمّناour paternal uncle لاdo not تَطمَعواhope فيfor لِحاقناovertaking us
فَكَمْfor how far بَينَbetween أَسماكِthe heights of السُّهىSuhā والكثاكِثِand the dust-heaps
Sons of our uncle, do not hope to overtake us;
O kinsmen, do not hope to catch up with us;
for what a gulf lies between Suhā's heights and the dust-heaps!
Too far between are the well-watered campsites and the parched.
سَبَقناكُمُwe outstripped you عَفواًeffortlessly وَلَمand did not تَلحَقواyou catch up بناwith us
عَلىdespite جُهْدِthe striving of مجهودٍan exhausted man ولَهْثَةِand the panting of لاهِثِa panting man
We outstripped you effortlessly, and you did not catch us,
We left you though we were not pursued,
for all a spent man's striving and a panting man's gasps.
Spurring on our steeds with no rest or slackening of pace.
وَقِدْماًand long ago عَهِدتُمُyou knew دَفْعَناour defense عنكُمُon your behalf وقدْand already
عُضِضتُمْyou were bitten بِأَنيابِby the fangs of الخطوبِcalamities الكوارثِdevastating
And long ago you knew our defense of you, when
You continue showering the clouds with your arrows
you were bitten by the fangs of devastating calamities.
As we race across the burning sands.
وَنَحنُand we عَلىon إمّاeither جِيادٍsteeds ضَوامرٍlean
وَإِمّاor else عَلىon أَقتادِthe saddle-frames of خوصٍnarrow-eyed camels دلائثِeasy-going
While we rode either lean steeds,
Your lack of faith decided your defeat,
or the saddle-frames of narrow-eyed, easy-going camels.
Your natures are malicious, evil and base.
وَماand not زِلتُمُyou ceased مُستَمطِرينَseeking rain from سَحائباًclouds
بِنَصرِكُمُwith aid for you ماwhile بَينَamid تلكَthose الهثاهثِtumults
You never ceased seeking rain from clouds
Yours are the marks of abject humiliation
to bring you aid amid those tumults.
As though you are women wailing their dead.
فَخَرْتُمْyou boasted بغيرof something other than الدّينreligion فيناagainst us وإنّماand only
فَخَرتمْyou boasted بأنسابٍof lineages لِئامٍbase خبائِثِfoul
Your boasts against us were not of religion; you only
You claimed superiority over us,
boasted of base and foul lineages.
Yet that was through weak, ineffective causes.
وإِنَّand indeed لكمyours are أطمارَrags of ذُلٍّhumiliation كأنّهاas though they
منin الشّينِdisgrace أطمارُthe rags of النّساءِthe women الطّوامِثِmenstruating
And yours are rags of humiliation, as though
We were not harmed by having no wealth,
in their disgrace they were menstruating women's rags.
While many a brimming crock is poured into the earth of a desolate grave!
وقلتُمْand you said بأنّاthat we الآمرونthe commanders عليكُمُover you
وذاكand that بأسبابٍby ties ضعافٍweak نكائثِfrayed
And you said, 'We are the ones who command you,'
You showed no kindness when you had the chance,
but that rests on weak, frayed ties.
While we acted with grace when opportunity knocked.
وماand not ضرّناharmed us أنّاthat we خَلِيّونare devoid منof غِنىًwealth
وكمand how often شِبَعٍsatiety يهفوmakes falter بهِit غَرْثُthe hunger of غارثِa hungry man
It has not harmed us that we are without wealth;
Naught made you arrogant save heedlessness of us,
and how often a starving man's hunger makes satiety falter!
Though among you we found a wrong-doing tyrant.
قَعَدتُمْyou held back عنِfrom الإجمالِfair dealing فيناtoward us بباعثٍat a prompter's urging
وَقُمناand we undertook بهِit فيكمْtoward you بلاwithout بعثِthe urging of باعثِa prompter
You held back from fair dealing with us at a prompter's urging,
I swear by the House around which
while we practiced it toward you without a prompter's urging.
Walked the pure-blooded, noble ancients!
وَماand nothing غَرّكمْdeceived you إلّاexcept التغافلُturning a blind eye عنكُمُto you
عَلىdespite ظالمٍa wrongdoer مِنكمْfrom among you لَديناin our midst وعائثِand a ravager
Only our turning a blind eye to you deceived you,
And the camel slain at Mina the day they slew it,
despite the wrongdoer and ravager from your ranks in our midst.
Led to the hands of wrong-doers lying in wait there!
فَأُقسِمُso I swear بِالبيتِby the House الّذيwhich جوّلتْroamed بهِaround it
أَخامصthe foot-arches of أقوامٍmen كرامٍnoble مَلاوِثِchieftains
So I swear by the House around which have roamed
Their covenant's knights imagined they had
the soles of noble chieftains;
Dyed their blades crimson with its blood.
وَبالبُدْنِand by the sacrificial camels فيin وادِيthe valley of مِنىMinā يومَon the day of عَقْرِهمْtheir slaughter
يُقَدْنَthey are led إلىto أيدٍhands هناكthere فوارثِthat eviscerate
and by the sacrificial camels in Minā's valley on their slaughter-day,
Many who rested amongst us lightly clad
led there to eviscerating hands.
Slept all night curled in the robes the valiant left behind.
تَخالُyou would think رِباطَthe bindings of الفاتقينthose slitting نحورَهاtheir throats
برشِّwith a spray of دمٍblood منهاfrom them غُلالَةَthe shift of طامثِa menstruating woman
You would think the bindings of those who slit their throats,
We surpass you in spreading glory's fragrance,
spattered with their blood, a menstruating woman's shift.
And towering high above you on the lofty peaks.
ومَنْand whoever باتspent the night فيin جَمْعٍJamʿ كليلاًexhausted منfrom الوَجاfootsoreness

And by whoever spent the night at Jamʿ, worn out by sore feet,
We are the noble ancestors whose worth you recognize,
beside the unkempt from night travel and the tousled—
And with whom glory resides, passed from heir to heir.
لَنحنُindeed we بِنشرwith the fragrance of الفخرِglory أعبقُmore fragrant منكُمُthan you
وَأَسمقand loftier مِنكمْthan you فيamong الجبالِthe mountains اللّوابِثِenduring
we are indeed more fragrant than you with glory's perfume,
Their open-handedness encompassed all mankind,
and loftier than you among the enduring mountains.
While hunger's pangs they suffered with resolve and care.
لنحنُindeed we السَّلَفُthe ancestral stock الأعلىthe loftiest الّذيwhich تعهدونَهُyou know it
علقناwe clung بهِto it منthrough وارثٍan heir بعدafter وارثِan heir
We are indeed that loftiest ancestral stock you know,
They bequeathed their great deeds to their descendants,
to which we have clung, heir after heir.
While from your forebears, naught have you to inherit.
هُمُthey أوسعواlavished فيamong النّاسِthe people ضمنَthe contents of أكفّهمْtheir palms
وَهمْand they أَوسعواamply satisfied فيin الأزْمِfamine جوعَthe hunger of المغارثِfamished bellies
They lavished among the people what their palms held,
They kept their children's honor free of shame,
and in famine satisfied the hunger of famished bellies.
While your past is one of infamous, sordid tales.
وهُمْand they ورّثواbequeathed آباءهمْto their fathers مأثرَاتِهمْtheir noble deeds
وأنتمْand you منof العلياءhigh honor غيرُnot مَوارِثِinheritors
They bequeathed their noble deeds to their fathers,
After drought, we are the best who can provide relief,
while you are no inheritors of high honor.
After calamities, we are the best who can give aid.
وهمْand they نزّهواkept unsullied أولادَهمْtheir children بأواخِرٍthrough later deeds
وشِنْتُمْand you marred قديماًsomething ancient كانthat was منكمْyours بحادِثِwith something new
They kept their children unsullied through later deeds,
Our blades strike truer into kidneys than yours,
while you stained what was ancient in you with something new.
As we thrust with sharp swords wielded by warriors brave.
وَنَحنُand we غَداةon the day of الجَدْبِdrought خيرُthe best مَخاصبٍsources of plenty
وَنَحنand we غداةَon the day of الرَّوعِterror خيرُthe best مَغاوثِsources of help
And in drought, we are the best sources of plenty,
Our swords shower heads with blows in the fray
and in terror, the best sources of help.
And hurl at the rabble insults strong and grave.
وَأَطعنُand better at piercing مِنكمْthan you لِلكلىat the kidneys بمثقّفٍwith a straightened spear
نَضمّwe close عليهِaround it بالطّوالِwith long fingers الشّوابثِgripping
And we outdo you at piercing kidneys with a straightened spear,
Ours are the heavens' downpour, hailstones and rain,
closing our long, gripping fingers around it.
While only a drizzle falls upon you from the passing clouds.
وَأَضربُand better at striking مِنكمْthan you للرؤوسat heads لدىamid وغىًbattle
وأوْهبُand more generous منكمْthan you للهِجانِwith noble white camels الرواغثِnursing their young
And we outdo you at striking heads amid battle,
No heads amongst us bow in shame or disgrace,
and give more freely than you noble white camels nursing their young.
Which vile rumors circulating might expose.
لناours فيin النّدىgenerosity سَحٌّpouring rain وهَطْلٌand streaming rain ووابِلٌand a downpour

In generosity, ours are pouring rain, streaming rain, and downpours;
How can you break faith while ours remains unwavering?
and how can you match that with drizzle's droplets?
Never have you known us to go back on our word!
وماand not خَزِيَتْwere disgraced منّاof ours رؤوسٌheads بريبةٍby a taint

No heads of ours have been disgraced by a taint
Do not dim our brilliance with your darkness,
that a searcher's probing exposes among the people.
Or equate our eagles with your crows!
فكيفso how لكمْfor you نَكثٌa breach of faith ومِنَand on أجلِناour account
ولمand not تُبْتَلوْاyou were afflicted منّاfrom us بنَكْثةِby the betrayal of ناكثِa betrayer
How, then, can you break faith—and on our account—
Take my words today as the roar of a raging lion,
when you have suffered no betrayer's treachery from us?
The groan of an aggrieved soul, a camel's rasping breath.
فَلاso do not تَكسِفواeclipse أَنوارَناour lights بظلامكمْwith your darkness
ولاand do not تعدِلواequate أصقارَناour falcons بالأباغِثِwith feeble birds
So do not eclipse our lights with your darkness,
nor equate our falcons with feeble birds.
خُذواtake كلاميmy words اليومَtoday زفرةَa sigh from زافرٍone who sighs
وأنّةَand the moan of مَكروبٍone in anguish ونفثَةَand the exhalation of نافثِone who exhales
Take my words today as a sigh from one who sighs,
and a troubled man's moan, and a breath from one who breathes out.
