لوif أنصفacted fairly القلبُthe heart لَمَاwould not have ودّكمْloved you all
لكنّهbut it الطّائشُthe reckless one لاdoes not يُنصِفُact fairly
Had the heart been fair, it would not have loved you.
If my heart were fair, it wouldn't love you,
But it is reckless and does not act fairly.
But it is impulsive and unjust.
يهمُّit intends بالوِرْدِto reach the watering place الّذيwhich لَمhas not يَزلْceased
يُصرفُit is turned away عنهfrom it الدّهرَthroughout time أوor يُصدَفُit is turned aside
It aims for the watering place from which it has always
It is preoccupied with the roses that haven't withered,
been turned away or kept back, all its days.
Though time diverts it or breaks it apart.
وَيَعشِقُand it loves اللّاهِيthe heedless one علىdespite أنّهthe fact that he
مُمرِضُهone who sickens it حيّاًwhile alive أوor المُتلِفُthe destroyer
And it loves the heedless one, though he
It loves the carefree one as if
makes it sick while it lives, or destroys it.
He is the one who makes it live or destroys it.
يلومنِيhe reproaches me والجَورُand the injustice مِنfrom عندهhis side
كيفhow يلومreproaches الوافِيَthe faithful one المُخلفُthe promise-breaker
He reproaches me, though the injustice comes from him.
It blames me while the wrong comes from it.
How can the promise-breaker reproach the faithful?
How can the loyal one blame the delinquent?
ويجحدُand he denies المرَّthe bitterness الّذيthat ذُقتُهI tasted it
فيin حبّهloving him وهوand he بهwith it أعرفُbetter acquainted
And he denies the bitterness that I have tasted
It denies the bitter drink I've tasted
in loving him, though he knows it better.
in its love, though it's most familiar with it.
ويدّعيand he alleges فيَّof me اِدّعاءَa pretense of الهوىlove
وَشاهدايَand my two witnesses الجَسَدُthe body المُدْنَفُwasted by illness
And he claims that I only pretend to love,
It claims for me the claim of passion,
yet my two witnesses are my body, wasted with illness.
While my witnesses are my battered body.
ليتَif only أُناساًsome people أخلفواthey broke وعدناthe promise made to us
لمhad not يَعِدواthey promised أوor ليتif only لمhad not يخلِفواthey broke their promise
If only those who broke their promise to us
I wish people hadn't promised then betrayed,
had never promised—or, if only they had not broken it.
Or I wish if they hadn't fulfilled at all.
ليسthere is no إلىto القَصْدِmoderation سبيلٌpath لهمْfor them
إمّاeither ضنينُstingy الكفِّof hand أوor مُسرِفُextravagant
They have no path to moderation:
There's no way for them to moderation -
each is either tight-fisted or extravagant.
Either stingy fists or extravagance.
وَكلّماand whenever اِستنجدتُI sought help فيin winning عطفهمْtheir compassion
بدمعِيَwith my tears الواكفstreaming لمdid not يعطفواthey showed compassion
And whenever I sought help to win their compassion
Whenever I sought their sympathy with my longsuffering tears,
with my streaming tears, they showed no compassion.
They didn't sympathize.
