    فَلستَ تَأخذ إلّا مِن يَدِ القدرِ

    Go to the uplands for livelihood, if you wish, or to the lowlands;

    for you receive only from the hand of fate.

    Whatever befalls you—and fate's decrees guarantee

    that it will befall you—you cannot avert through caution.

    I have seen what makes hearts wither—

    as mine would, had I not a heart fashioned from stone.

    فَالأرضِ مَملوءةُ الأقطار بالعِبَرِ

    Ponder in your heart what you behold;

    for the earth is filled in every region with lessons.

    Do not spend the night rejoicing in something left

    to you by a calamity deliberately harsh and sparing nothing.

    فَلَم يَفتْ خَطَرٌ إلّا إلى خَطَرِ

    Nor say, 'The dangers have passed,' if they vanish;

    for no danger has passed except into another danger.

    How can there be repose for one who, evening and morning,

    is at risk in everything he undertakes?

    He spends the night either with the thorns of qatād beneath

    his side, or else with a bed of needles.

    فَلَستَ تُبصِرُ إلّا سَنْحةَ البَصَرِ

    Let your gaze range over all the peoples;

    for you see only what appears to the eye.

    Do you not see what I see of their faults?

    And for these faults, no apologist can offer them an excuse.

    Every day you see me in their midst,

    devising ways to help those who devise ways to harm me.

    They said, 'Be patient.' I said, 'Before you, I was made to swallow

    cups of bitter aloes from forcing myself to be patient.'

    Nor have I benefited—while lasting sorrow accompanies me

    throughout life—from the length of my years.

    وعاد بالكدِّ من لم يَحظَ بالثَّمَرِ

    I have planted saplings that bore no fruit;

    and whoever gained no fruit returned with toil alone.

    Where among all people, every one of them, can I find

    one of them sweet in disposition and good in repute,

    sweeter to my heart than my own heart, and sweeter in

    his savor to me than my hearing and my sight?

    And whenever my palm probes his sides,

    I test reed-segments within him that have no weakness.

    I confide my troubles to him until he becomes

    their guarantor, and with him I resolve my cares.
