Flashes of lightning appeared to us at al-Abraqayn,

a dawning for a horizon from which dawn had vanished.

As though the stars of night were pearls, and among them

    lightning glittered with flickering gleams.

And I imagined only yellow wars-dye on the horizon; indeed,

if it was not wars-dye, it was saffron perfume.

As though dark blood had mingled with the air, or there flowed

pure wine for us through the folds of cloud.

It shines and vanishes, then draws near and recedes,

and widens its course, then narrows.

No breasts have fluttered except like this,

nor have veins pulsed except like this.

Its flashing stirred my longing toward faces

that have radiance—and the longing one is full of longing.

On this side of al-Liwa is a gazelle who has all he desires,

clinging to the cores of hearts, adhering fast.

He has his way with me; and barring his tenderness

toward me is a deep sea, both its depths brimming.

I am devoted to sparing him, yet he has no

    path toward sparing me.

His promise is only a flicker of rainless lightning,

or only a mirage shimmering in the desert.

So I love one to whom I am not dear,

and one who does not yearn for me makes me yearn.

And I, toward one who has no leniency

and no compassion for me, am compassionate.

    O sickness of my heart, I see you never spare me a day;

O drunkenness of my heart, I never see you sober up!

With my life I would ransom the one I bade farewell on the day at Darij,

and my eyelid was drowned in the flood of tears.

He burdened me, through the weight of the day of his farewell,

with torments that even the enduring could not bear.

They slay a person's resolve, though he stands determined,

and demolish the pillar of patience, though it is firm.

And a night we spent, when he was tender toward love,

with separation far away and harm distant and remote.

The spiteful had lost their way in it, and severed were

the obstacles that had hindered us before.

And we were as the enemy wished—for he

was grieved by what we loved—and as a friend wished.

So the fragrance of union was spread abroad that day,

and the sweetness of hopes was tasted there, unmixed.

There was nothing but chastity and purity,

and only a gentle lament for passionate love,

and only whispered confidences of love and conversation

polished along both its margins, elegant.

Upon it is a waft of saffron fragrance,

and within it, fragrant Mandali aloeswood, powdered fine.

So the love-thirsty among us stayed with his thirst quenched,

until the rifts of dawn appeared.

And it came, its shirt embroidered; when it appeared,

every captive of darkness was free.

It took down the tent-ropes of deep darkness, as though

a company had departed from some encampment.

So it was only a white blaze upon the gloom,

or else a shaven head for darkness.

And it was driven across al-Batha until it seemed

young desert she-camels startled by a prized camel stallion.

If the mouth of darkness was not smiling,

then your sword, O horizon of dawn, is keen-edged.

And if this was not dawn itself,

then there was a blaze on the side east of the caravan.

So no night-journey remained for the traveler pursuing a cherished aim,

    nor a night-visit to the encampments for a night-visitor.
