يَقولونَthey say ليto me لِمْwhy أَنتَyou بِالذُّلِّin humiliation راكدٌremaining still
فَقُلتُso I said لِأَنّيbecause I فيfor الحَياةِlife رَغوبُdeeply desirous
They say to me, “Why do you remain sunk in humiliation?”
So I said, “Because I am eager for life.”

He has shed honor from his shoulders who is charmed
By life, which grows sweet and pleasant to him.
وَعَيشِيَand my living بَينَamong الأغبياءِfools غضاضةٌan indignity
وَليand I have مِنfrom عيوبِthe faults of الأقربينَclosest kin عُيوبُfaults
And living among fools is an indignity to me,
And I share the faults of my closest kin.

And between my ribs—though I have not revealed it—
There is searing heat over unfulfilled hopes, and flame.

And Time, in my eyes, each day and night,
Is guilty of wrongs, though I voice no reproach.

And I suffer every deadly illness, yet I have
No physician for my illness among all men.
