    فما حشوُها إلّا قتيلٌ وقاتلُ

    Beware the tribe's dwellings, for they are killing grounds;

    They hold nothing but the slain and the slayer.

    You obeyed desire until desire harmed you,

    And the reproaching women's words taught you prudence.

    But what has desire to do with me, when youth has gone far,

    And departing youth has left my temples?

    The skirts of my youth have drawn away from me,

    And gray hair, like the thaghama plant, covers my head.

    From my tears, morning and evening, I have

    For the loss of tender youth, a drizzle and a downpour.

    How can gray hair be banished, or youth restored,

    By throbbing hearts or streaming tears?

    A lightning flash gleamed for us from Abraq al-Hazn,

    As a wan dawn gleams at the end of night.

    It shines and fades, never lasting for a watcher,

    Neither concealed nor standing in view.

    When it shone in the dim dawn, it changed where they were,

    And turned saffron, its fine robes reddening upon it.

    It recalled to me one who visited me from his homeland,

    And remembrance is only what heartaches draw forth.

    After I have tested all that can be tested,

    And the worthy have acknowledged my straight course,

    أولو الفضل إلّا ما تقوّل قائلُ

    And I had no fault such as might bring reproach upon

    Men of merit, save what some speaker fabricated;

    من الشّرقِ والتّغريب عنّي الرّواحلُ

    And camels have traveled bearing seekers of every virtue,

    Eastward and westward, carrying word of me;

    ويوم ردىً والعَوْدُ للعِبء حاملُ

    And I was laden with the clan's burdens in generosity

    And on days of death—the seasoned camel bears the load;

    وشاطرني ضيقَ المكانِ الحُلاحِلُ

    And I won the honors of humankind at ease,

    While the mighty chief shared the cramped space with me;

    وجُدتُ لهمْ بالحزمِ والحزمُ ماطلُ

    And I aided them with counsel when counsel was absent,

    And lavished sound judgment on them when judgment held back;

    وبان لهمْ منّي صحيحٌ وباطلُ

    And when they chose me, no harm overtook them,

    And through me truth and falsehood became clear to them;

    وغيريَ من حَلْيِ المكارمِ عاطلُ

    And I trailed the robes of kings upon the dust,

    While others lacked the ornaments of noble deeds;

    عديلاً له هذي النّجومُ المواثلُ

    And I have a station with the caliph whose equal

    These stars on high have never claimed;

    مقامٌ ولا لِي دونه الدّهرَ حائلُ

    I stand, and between me and his throne

    There is no station, nor ever any barrier between me and him;

    إليه على ذاك التحجّبٍ واصلُ

    Visitors are barred from him, yet I

    Reach him despite that seclusion;

    My face never passed beyond the reach of his glance

    Among the people without his asking after me—

    Has he imputed to me what is not mine, and does he count me

    One of his kind—this weak-jointed, obscure man?

    And he thinks me like those he sees

    Among men—this heedless man bereft of insight.

    I am hidden only from the blind; how often

    Has the dawn before them been veiled from dim eyes!

    If he should say, 'The stock and origin are one,'

    Pregnant women have, after all, borne every man.

    وَما فاتني إلّا الصّديقُ المجاملُ

    I found an avowed enemy without seeking one;

    All I lacked was a courteous friend.

    How long must I lower my gaze over grit in my eye,

    While the watering places are muddied for me alone among men?

    And find myself cheated by every tongue-tied fool,

    Whose station among humankind is low?

    When he speaks, eyes and ears turn away,

    And nothing he ever says has any worth.

    If he joins a private council, he fails to please his people

    With his counsel, nor do assemblies praise him.

    He tries to deceive me, though deceit is not my nature,

    And none but a deceiver has put experience to shame.

    He falsely claims that I am his equal,

    But how could fingertips equal the palms?

    Who will carry a message from me to Ibn Awf,

    As the longings deep within me desire?

    فلا العهدُ منسيٌّ ولا الودّ حائلُ

    Our bodies are far apart, but our hearts are close;

    Our covenant is not forgotten, nor has affection changed.

    How often have we, with estrangement wrapped around us,

    Met in thought, while love remained unbroken.

    If our lips keep silent over hurts,

    Behind them are hearts of ours that slay.

    How many people among us have limbs

    That seem idle, though they are at work!

    For the fruits of a crop are gathered when

    Seasons have passed over it and obstacles have vanished.

    Take comfort: the days of separation are many

    To one who counts, and days of meeting are few.

    The turns of fortune once granted us nights

    That have gone; where are the coming nights ahead?

    I shall not forget our time together as long as I live,

    When barren years gave birth among us.

    The days pass over us, seeming short,

    And our hours go by, all of them late afternoons.

    I hope indeed that they will return, although

    That long, drawn-out span has passed since their loss.

    فَقد طالما اِلتفّتْ عليَّ الأباطِلُ

    Ah, I see no truth whose straight course I might follow;

    For falsehoods have long wound themselves about me.

    For the laughing winds are frowning,

    And the verdant branches are withered.

    And may a cloud water the barren dwellings,

    With roars and rattling peals that never cease.

    For you are of a people who, when they lift their spears,

    Have spear-tips streaming with armored champions' blood.

    They plunge into battle's darkness, their palms

    Clasping what the sword-polishers have refined.

    From their fathers and forefathers may be recognized

    Marks upon their characters and distinctive traits.

    Toward firm resolve, they were not swayed by opinion or passion,

    Nor did distractions keep them from great deeds.

    Nor did there parade among them, though generosity had taken

    Their treasures, those cares in trailing robes.

    Nor did their hearts flutter on a day of terror,

    Nor did their muscles tremble for fear of death.

    وقد ضَحِيَتْ عنهنّ تلك القساطلُ

    I seem to see them charging like wolves,

    With those clouds of battle-dust cleared away from them;

    And above them are the men, who never face sword-edges

    In battle without women becoming bereaved mothers.

    You see only men who seem

    Swords, with swords of their own in their right hands.

    Our wishes and purposes are fulfilled,

    And our vengeance is won and our blood-claims settled.
