تفريrend وتقطعand sever منّاfrom us كلَّevery موصولِbond
Do you not see Time, its sharp swords drawn,
Rending and severing every bond among us?
معلَّلاًkept hopeful كلّماwhenever يدوِيit afflicts ويُسقِمُهand makes him ill
وربّماand sometimes ضرّit harms ذاone with سُقمٍillness بتعليلِby offering hope
One is kept hopeful whenever it afflicts and sickens him,
And sometimes it harms the sick by offering hope.
أمّلْتُI hoped فيهin it أموراًthings ماnot ظفرتُI succeeded بهاin obtaining them
وعادand returned يسحبdragging ذيلَthe train of المنعِdenial تأميليmy hope
I looked to it for things I never attained,
And my hope returned, dragging the train of denial.
فعدِّso move مثواكyour dwelling عنaway from شيءa thing منيتَyou were afflicted بهwith it
فلاfor there is no اِنتِفاعٌbenefit لمشغولٍfor one preoccupied بمشغولِfrom another preoccupied
So move your dwelling away from what you have been afflicted with;
For one preoccupied gains nothing from another so occupied.
