مَنْwho مبلغٌwill convey عنّيon my behalf بنىthe sons of مالكٍMālik
أنّthat الّذيthe one whom داويتُمُyou treated أقْرَفاhas relapsed
Who will carry word from me to Banū Mālik:
Who will tell the sons of Mālik on my behalf
The wound you tended has broken open again.
that the one you treated has relapsed?
دُمناwe remained steadfast علىin العهدthe covenant لمنwith one who لمdid not يدمْremain steadfast
وَقَدand indeed وفيناwe kept faith للّذيwith the one who ماdid not وفىkeep faith
We stayed true to the covenant with those who did not,
We held to the covenant with one who did not,
And kept faith with those who kept none.
and kept faith with one who was faithless.
وَلَيسَand it is not فيin العدلjustice ولاnor غيرهanything else
أنْthat يظلمshould wrong الظّالمُthe wrongdoer مَنone who أنصفاhas dealt fairly
Neither in justice nor outside its bounds
Neither justice nor anything else permits
Should a wrongdoer wrong one who has dealt justly.
a wrongdoer to wrong one who has dealt fairly.
لاdo not تسمعواlisten to القولَthe statement بلاwithout حجّةٍproof
فطالماfor often بُدِّلَit has been altered أوor حُرِّفاdistorted
Do not heed a claim unsupported by proof;
Do not heed a statement without proof,
Many a time it has been altered or distorted.
for often it has been altered or distorted.
ولاand do not تزيدوناgive us more أباطيلكمْyour falsehoods
فإنّماfor only أمرضتُمُyou have sickened مُدْنَفاone gravely ill
Do not ply us further with your falsehoods;
And give us no more of your falsehoods,
You have only made one already gravely ill still sicker.
for you have only sickened one already gravely ill.
كمhow many فيكمُamong you مِنof ماطلٍone who delays وعدَهhis promise
فإنْthen if يَجُدْhe is generous يوماًone day بهwith it أخلفاhe breaks his promise
How many among you delay fulfilling their promise,
How many among you are slow to make a promise,
And if one day they grant it, they break their word.
then, if they ever grant it, break it!
ومِنand of مُصِرٍّan obstinate man زادincreased إصرارَهhis obstinacy
إِنْif لِيمَhe is blamed فيfor السِّيّءِwrongdoing أوor عُنِّفاhe is harshly rebuked
And how many an obstinate man grows more stubborn
And how many stubborn men grow more stubborn
When blamed for a misdeed or harshly rebuked.
if blamed for wrongdoing or harshly rebuked!
وكمand how many عطفناwe tried to win over منكمُamong you مُعرِضاًone who turns away
فلمyet did not نجدْwe find منfrom معرضٍone who turns away مَعْطَفاa turning back
How often we tried to win back one of you who turned away,
How many among you who turned away have we tried to win back,
Yet among those who turned away found none inclined toward us.
yet found no turning back from anyone who turned away.
وماand not رأيناwe have seen منكُمُamong you فيin الهوىlove
إلّاexcept بخيلstingy الكفّthe hand أوor مُسرفاan extravagant one
In matters of affection, we have seen among you
And in love we have seen among you
Only the tight-fisted or the wildly prodigal.
only the tightfisted or the extravagant.
عودواreturn إلىto السِّلمِpeace كماas كنتُمُyou were
فقدfor already مضىhas passed منof حربكمْyour war ماwhat كفىsufficed
Return to peace, as once you were;
Return to peace, as once you were,
Enough of your warfare has already passed.
for your war has already gone on long enough.
