وبذلاًand lavish giving للتّقاطعِfor severing ties والتّجافيand estrangement
Are you so sparing with communion and sincere affection,
yet so lavish with severance and estrangement,
ونبذاًand casting aside للمودّةِof affection عنout of ملالٍweariness
كماas نُبِذَتْwere cast away حُصَيّاتُsmall pebbles القِذافِof the sling
and casting affection aside out of weariness,
as pebbles from a sling are cast away,

and treading, in estrangement, a road
obscure, with utterly unfamiliar landmarks,

where, when feet tread it amiss,
some fall upon their foreheads, and others slip?

It is strange that you oppose me, though long ago
I felt sure I would never oppose your wishes;

and that you break your promise to me, while for you alone
are my steadfast affection and my repeated visits;

and that you come to the brimming pools of my love,
yet deny me the last few drops of water.

Once, whenever I attained the farthest reaches of desire,
I was displeased; now I am content with bare sufficiency.

And I was to him, when others eagerly turned
to his private talk, like deadly poison.

You would debate questions and meanings with me,
and at times ask me to recite rhymed verses.

And many an idea had its crookedness set straight,

and another, from which its scouts had strayed,
was then won by your swift grasp and mine.

Gatherings in which there was no path
for the passions of souls to encroach upon chastity.

And when I raced toward the heights of honor,
the slow became distinct from the swift.

So my shouldering of burdens and my favors were not spurned,
nor were my withdrawal and turning away treated unjustly.

A greeting from one sick at heart and wasted away,
to a bygone time, its inner wing-feathers full.

The vicissitudes of nights folded away its traces,
and it was struck as a leather tent is struck.
