Behold, today I have given myself

to one who, in affection, is like my very self,

and without whom I would have found my drinking-water foul,

and found my own touch rough to feel.

A youth to whom God bound my branches,

and entwined my root and lineage with his root.

With him I charge against my enemies' fury,

and through him take refuge in the heights of Quds.

His brow's light, by night and morning,

whenever I face him, is my full moon and my sun.

So tell al-Zaynabi the words of a close friend

whose love is pure, not cloaked in ambiguity:

Do you remember when we descended at Dhat Irq,

    together upon a sturdy she-camel's saddle-bows,

on a fleet she-camel whose bounding carried her

ahead of the strong she-camels, without a saddlecloth?

And when, from Hudhayl, there flowed toward us

the ravines of both valleys, with nothing held back—

men who care nothing for death,

whether it comes upon them by day or at evening,

with tongues created for something other than tasting,

and mouths opened for something other than biting.

They share the scant food among themselves

whenever provisions are available, at any time.

As though they were upon its lava-fields,

and had come upon you, plainly visible—

you drove them off as they advanced upon us,

with a bow of curving shoulders, furnished with a grip.

As though its moaning, when drawn,

were the wail of an aged she-camel bereft of five.

And when they received from us all

grief's remedy in blows and spear-thrusts,

they climbed the peaks of every lofty mountain,

along paths whose tracks had been effaced.

As though the setting rim of the sun were painting

its crests and summit with yellow wars-dye.

May your ransom, O dweller in my heart,

be the life of a coward, terror-stricken within,

who flees before the flash of death

and makes flight his shield—the worst of shields.

For how many men I saw before you

because of whom I wished my senses had never existed!

I guessed that their resolve was weak,

yet their feebleness exceeded my guess:

    with skins whitened by pampering,

    and reputations darkened by defilement.

Their neighbor's position before them is like

that of one hoping for yesterday's return.

He calls to someone among them who is deaf to him,

as the kin of one entombed return in lament.

And when I alighted among them, they served me

bowls of deception and goblets of treachery.

And I returned with nothing in my hands, after

buying them, save my loss and my ill fortune.

Her driver brings her to the wells,

and in the vitals is camelthorn that grants no forgetting.

He shares your cares when they descend,

and amply follows your example and offers consolation.

And your branch is leafy through his love,

and your planting in his soil is the finest planting.

May God guard me from what I fear for the one

in whom, of all this creation, lies my solace,

and turn calamities concerning him away from my heart,

so I may be safe forever, morning and evening.
