If in your clemency you do not excuse us,

then we shall offer an apology to no one.

And a servant, knowing his master's forbearance,

    sins deliberately and without intent.

My plea is not my resource; rather,

your turning a blind eye to sinners is among my resources.

O rider, convey my greeting when

you sight tents lying far away in the distance.

And say to the pride of all kings,

fathers who have passed away and sons alike,

and to him whom God has granted a station

so often sought, yet never attained by any hand:

Your servant is steadfast amid hardships, but since

you went far from him, he has lost his fortitude.

He lowers his gaze, desolate for what he has lost

of you, though no inflammation afflicts his eyelids.

My heart journeyed when you departed, and did not

prove faithless, though my body betrayed it.

I, O possessor of the two majesties, having

been left behind, apart from you, unwillingly and not by choice,

am like a frightened man in a desolate land,

    hiding in darkness, alone,

or a burden-bearer, scorched by thirst,

beside a scant pool after sweet, flowing water.

O my nearness to him, return to me! And O

my distance from him, by God, never return!

And tell those who envy what I was favored with:

Restore my former days, and begin envying me anew.

And remain for us beneath a kingdom's shade,

more unassailable in might than a lion's flank.

    May Mihragan gladden you, lingering,

yet swift to bring what you hope for.

It passes, and another of its kind comes to us,

while you remain with us forever.

And before long I shall visit, from my own land,

your flourishing home upon the land.

And there is no need, in reaching

Amid, standing open, for any length of time.
