From between your front teeth comes fresh saliva for us to sip.

And within your shift is a tender, swaying ban-tree shoot.

And you, though we have found no ease with you,

Are dearer to us than any other, and more enthralling.

You put us off with promises of union with you; and often

The delayer has died short of union, never attaining it.

Love is nothing but abasement and greed,

Brought upon him by one reckless and unsound in judgment.

But for passion, no proud man would be humbled,

Nor would one unacquainted with weakness grow weak.

When we caught up with the laden camels one evening,

Among them was a slender-waisted one of lovable ways.

Passion coursed through my breast, as though

Red-robed wine were coursing through me.

I had never thought that my heart would be snared

By the eye of that earring-adorned gazelle.

He is frail; yet one whose heart contains

Torments of longing for him is frailer than he.

O their abode, may you, for love of them, be watered

In bucketfuls by a thick-fringed cloud of the Two Simaks' rains.

When a drooping black mass of it appears,

You would say camels were swaying with their litters.

And may its blazing lightning never cease

Above you—or, failing that, its crashing thunder—

Until the meadow returns in you, as though it were

Stars in a sky, or a striped mantle.

And I was reminded of Najd, despite its great remoteness,

While we were in Ghawr, by a fierce, icy crosswind.

Blowing with the fragrance of one I long to meet,

And between us lie a broad plain and a vast waste.

Can people boast who have no distinction like mine?

How far is aimless wandering from the straight path!

Mine is a dwelling above the Milky Way's heights,

And where the bright stars stand, I have a station.

My people are those who, when a band held back

From the lofty summit, did not hold back.

    وإنْ شهدوا نَجْوَى العَضيهةِ يَصدِفوا

    Noble men: when pressed to accept dishonor, they refuse;

And if they witness whispered slander, they turn aside.

    وإِنْ طلبوا شيئاً من الذّكر ألْحَفوا

    If they mount the back of glory, they take others up behind;

And if they seek any renown, they press insistently.

Not one among them but enters battle,

And there he spares whomever he wishes, and slays.

If the generosity of their hands gives their wealth away,

They win spoils with spearpoints and replenish it.

They have no fault except what their enemy alleges,

And what a spiteful envier says of them.

When they trail their Yemeni mantles and robe themselves,

And lower their wraps as veils, draping them down,

And waft fragrance, surpassing every perfume caravan's scent

In pungency—and the Fatimids' fragrance is known—

You see men like lions, and youths

Such as that bird-divining augur sought:

Noble chiefs who lavish every precious thing,

When the short-measuring miser grudges giving.

You see them moderate; but if generosity calls

For their wealth, they give much and lavish beyond measure.

We have among Quraysh all that their Prophet has,

And ours among them is that draped veil.

    ويدعو بنا إِنْ طوّف المتطوِّفُ

    If they touch its corners, it is with remembrance of us;

And through us the circling pilgrim prays as he circles.

We aided him at Uhud and Khaybar,

When his supporters fled from him and were seized by panic.

We ransomed him from death in his bed,

While death rushed toward him in a violent charge.

He favored us above all mankind with kinship to him by marriage,

While the eager suitor was driven away from him.

On the day of the cloak, he placed us within it,

While the hearts of those not granted that were trembling.
