أدلّتshe acted presumptuously بحسنٍupon beauty خُوّلتْshe was granted ولوَand if اِنّهاshe
أدلّتْshe acted presumptuously بإحسانupon kindness إليناtoward us عذرتُهاI would have excused her
She presumed upon the beauty she was given; had she
presumed upon her kindness to us, I would have excused her.
وقدand indeed رُزقتْshe was granted منّيfrom me مودّةlove مهجتِيmy soul
ولكنّنيbut I منهاfrom her الغَداةَthis morning حُرِمتُهاI was denied it
And from me she received my soul's love,
but this morning I was denied her love.
وقطّعتand she severed الأسبابَthe bonds بينِيbetween me وبينهاand between her
ولَوand if كنتُI had been خِلْواًfree منof هواهاlove for her قطعتُهاI would have severed them
And she severed the bonds between us;
and had I been free of love for her, I would have severed them.
ولمّاand when رأتْshe saw ثِقلَthe weight of العتابreproach تجرّمتْshe falsely accused
عليّagainst me ذنوباًsins عندهاin her view ماnot عَلِمْتُهاI knew them
And when she saw the weight of reproach, she charged
me with sins she claimed were mine, of which I knew nothing.
تعاقبُshe punishes مَنْone who لمnever يُجرهاlet them pass فيin ضميرِهِhis mind
ولوand if أنّهاthey مرّتhad come عَلَىَّupon me غفرتُهاI would have forgiven them
She punishes one who never let them cross his mind;
and had they befallen me, I would have forgiven them.
وملّتْand she grew weary وماthough not طالlasted long التزاورُmutual visiting بيناbetween us
ولوand if أنّنيI طاولتُهاkept her company long ماnot مَلِلْتُهاI would have tired of her
And she grew weary, though our visits had not lasted long;
and had I stayed long with her, I would not have tired of her.
