وَلَمّاand when تفرَّقناwe parted كماas شاءَتِwilled النّوىseparation
وَلَمّا تفرَّقنا كما شاءَتِ النّوى
تبيّنَbecame clear حبٌّlove خالصٌpure وتودُّدُand affection
تبيّنَ حبٌّ خالصٌ وتودُّدُ
And when we parted, as separation willed,
pure love and affection became clear.
كأنِّيas though I were وقدand already سارَdeparted الخليطُthe companions عشيّةًone evening
كأنِّي وقد سارَ الخليطُ عشيّةً
أخوone afflicted with جِنَّةٍmadness ممّاfrom how often أقومُI rise وأقعُدُand I sit
أخو جِنَّةٍ ممّا أقومُ وأقعُدُ
When the company departed one evening, I seemed
a man possessed, so often did I rise and sit.
